break-in speed < 105mph

so says the manual...but i have kept it below 80mph - around 60-75mph on highway varying speed/ rpm which is a painful as it is (around 3k RPM...which is also below the 5.5K rpm max in manual)......itching to do short spurts near 5k etc.........i know varying speed is important but 5.5k/ 105mph max seems a bit too steep for break-in....and yes I have RTFM.....but interested in knowing if most folks here kept it below 80mph...completed 500miles the other day so hoping to open it up beyond the 75-80mph....

we are told to not exceed 170kmh an hour.
i have hit 170 maybe twice, and once 174 or so, never over that, i also havent held speeds over 165 for more than a couple of seconds. though, i nearly always drive over 100 kmh an hour on the highway, like 100-140 is pretty standard for my daily commute, plus city and traffic speeds.

during my break in period i kept it below 5k rpm and below 100mph... but i touched 100mph here and there but only for a minute or two.

Curious why you think 5500rpm/105mph seems "steep"? The car is capable of 8400rpm and 160mph+ (or much more if delimited), so the break-in requirements are well below its maximum potential.

I think most people (outside of Germany, anyway) don't do a whole lot of driving at 100mph simply because of the legal issues involved, not because of fear of screwing up the break-in. But as for RPM, I would definitely go all the way to 5500rpm somewhat frequently. Staying at or below 3000RPM is not a great idea IMHO, since you are supposed to vary the RPM through the entire allowed ranage.

I hit 5500rpm very frequently once the car is warmed up pre 1200 miles. Sometimes if I'm at 65mph I put it in 3rd (6mt) and let it sit at about 5k rpm for like 10 seconds and then go to another gear.

For the first 1200 miles you drive it like you stole it.... with in the break in guidelines.

I babied my 2001 M3 through it's break in. Not so with the 2006. My 2006 burns no oil, and is a tad faster, 2 tenths in the 1/4.
