E92 M3 CSL predictions???
Looking at the differences between the E46 CSL and E46 M3 I found this:
CSL is 11.5% lighter & makes 5% more HP than the stock M3....which translates to a 15.6% better power to weight ratio.... This would make the E92 CSL something around this: 3150lbs 440hp (6% more) 7.15 lb-HP.... Which should be good for a sub 7:40 ring time??? I do think 470hp or more is possible since tuners are already getting that......& the race motor is "quoted" at 485...but probably is closer to 525 or more.... Whats your prediction of the next CSL?? Also how much more $$$ do you think it will cost?

I always chuckle when companies take shit out of the car to make them lighter and charge us more.
Before you say anything, yes I know |

Never understood the CSL. If you want a road car the E46 CSL was a noisy, uncomfortable, rattly git and if you want a track car get a dedicated track car. Much better to buy an M3 plus a track car for the same price.
For me, an E92 M3 plus a top notch 7 kit is a better way to go. Added benefit, if you bend something like a Westfield, Dax or Tiger on the track it wont cost anywhere near as much to fix as a CSL so you can push it even harder without fear.

I think the concept is getting as close to that race car feel as possible while still being street legal. Of course, you could get a Lotus or something like that instead. But, I suppose the CSL is faster.

Leg,
Couldn't agree with you more. The M3 is not a proper track star no matter how good it is on the road, everything goes all soft when pushing. A Catherham or Westfield is the right choice, not too expensive but quicker than the M3 and more importantly bags more fun. |

Even if you have not experienced it personally could you inform us as to which things in particular go "all soft"? I disagree with many of you guys here. Having a dedicated track and dedicated street car would be nice. But for those of us who don't want to, can't afford it or don't track enough isn't the M3 the best bet going in it's class, price and performance range? It sure is for me. |

"track" cars have certain trade offs for speed (on the track) that make them HORRIBLE on the street.....super stiff suspensions, gutted (think LOUD) interiors, peaky engines with loud exhaust.....all these things are great for the track but impossible to live with on the street unless you are VERY hardcore.....
When you start looking at cars that have street level comforts that still perform well at the track, things get pricey quick!! M3's are a great trade off....still comfortable driving to and from the track, yet a great performer when pushed hard.....

You are also right that as a one car fits all the M3 is probably as good as you can get. The problem is when you have experienced even a humble £5K secondhand Caterham on the track with it's pushrod 1.6L the M3 feels a very quick but ultimately dull car to drive on the track and believe me the Caterham is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to proper trackday cars for less the £10K secondhand. Though if you have about £15~£20K secondhand to spend you will be amazed at what you can get and there will be nothing out of the showroom which will touch you. |

Some street cars work better than others, but as you indicate, no "proper" street car is fully at home on track. You make the best of what you have - and of course that can be fun as well. Bruce |

My prediction... no CSL for the US... if there was, I wouldnt get one mostly becuase I dont have 100-120K to spend on one and I like things like premium sound and AC....
