Well, I had a long debate before I bougth my car. Finally I ended up getting auto. Since then everytime I am stuck in traffic I thank God my for my decision. But everytime I am driving on open road I regret that I got auto.

So it all depends on where you drive. If you spend a lot of time in stop and go traffic MT is nothing but torture. But if you spend more time driving on open road then go with MT.

Good luck

Well, you need to learn how to drive stick. However, the DCT is a better transmission.

Just look at what the new M5 and M3 GTS are going to get.

if you've never driven stick before, i would advise getting an old beater with manual trans to practice before getting a M3... that is, if you decide to go stick with your M3 !
granted the manual trans on the M3 will have a different feel compared to a 1990 Civic, but at least you'd learn the basics...
either way i'm sure you cant go wrong! i'd love to have this kind of dilemna right now

LOL, [Hijack Alert!] that looks just like my nav screen every day. I've finally stopped using it, because I was becoming dangerous trying to cancel the traffic bulletins offering me endless new detour routes. After 5 or six offerings, I usually ended up getting a message that no detour is possible, and after trying these detours, they added more time than the delay estimate on the original preferred route. I think a global message, "Traffic Gridlocked Everywhere--Flip a Coin" should be added to the 1st priority warning list.

Talk about a prescription for a distracted driver. I might as well have been texting. In fact, I don't remember seeing a thread on this--think I'll start one.

Well, we all have different preferences. I started driving with MT when I was 12 (not kidding, I had to use 2 pillows on my bach and 3 under my bud since the seats were not adjustable LOL). I have about 80 miles commute everyday. Sometimes espicially when it rains 95% of this 80 miles is bumber to bumper traffic. I can't put a definite number but I would have hit the clutch at least 500-600 times on average. I don't see any fun in that

sorry i read your post a little too fast the first time
i guess a manual gives you the feeling that you're more "connected" with the car... but i hear that the auto is great too, so i'll let those with experience elaborate on that

I had only owned manual cars my entire life and about a year and a half ago bought a auto with the paddle shifters and all that because of traffic where I moved. Suffice it to say that 8 months later, I sold the auto and went back to a manual and never looked back. The paddle shifters were fun and convenient but whenever I wasn't in traffic I really, REALLY, REEEEAAAAALLLLLLYYYYY missed the 6MT.

I will never buy an auto/DCT/PDK again...

I am on my 13th BMW, 11 of which were sticks.

My 535xi (now gone) was a Steptronic, which was OK with me. However, the Steptronic is poor, compared to the new 7 speed DCT.

My new M3 is the DCT and I totally love it. It allows you to be lazy and drive normally around town and in congested traffic; but it also allows you to use the paddles and drive as aggressively as you wish. Once your MDrive is set up properly, you can turn the car from a easy daily driver, to a screaming-meany with the touch of one button on the steering wheel. You can do either in Drive mode or Sequential mode.

As an added bonus, the DCT cars are actaully quicker than a manny tranny one, all other things being equal.

But many prefer the stick, and I know why. For me, today, I prefer the DCT.

YMMV.
