285/35/19's Stock Rims *Pics*

This issue hasn't been put to bed and it's hard to find concrete answers here on the forums. I have been assured that you can fit 285 width, regardless of sidewall height (30/35) on the OEM rims.

A 9.5" rim is the minimum requirement for a 285 tire.

Everyone asking if 275's can fit...this should be an obvious answer. Yes.
The M5 rear rims are 9.5" and come with 285/35/19's stock. You're safe.

"The standard E60 wheels are size 8.5x19 fronts and 9.5x19 rears."
http://www.m5board.com/vbulletin/e60...l-offsets.html

I will be posting pics as soon as the tires are installed early next week.

The only thing that really needs addressing is why BMW didn't throw 255/35/19's up front and 275/35/19's in the rear for the E9X M3, considering these sizes are dead on for an 8.5"/9.5" wheel.

Anyways, badass pics to come

EDIT:

Short read!

In summary: 275/35 and 285/35 tires fit the stock 9.5" rear 19" wheel fine.
255/35/19 tires up front clear (depending on brand). Brands known to work Vred's, Michelin PS2's, RE-11's.
255/40/19 tires up front rub - full lock either direction, u-turns. Tire tested- Michelin PS2
Keep to 26" or below on front tire diameter and you will be fine. Max width for OEM 8.5" fronts is 255.

Had that setup, but the car was too high at the back. The best thing is that you'll have plenty of grip.

You need to go with a 30 profile. The 35 will be way to tall and look weird.

For sure.
Ahmed, have any pics?

I like the beefy look as it was what I was going for.

The sidewall is only .2" thicker...diameter is .6" bigger.
I'll also be lowered so I think it's going to look hot. Obviously that's an opinion but we'll see

Vredesteins 255/35 and 275/35

For what it's worth I just had Vredesteins mounted...255/35/19 front and 275/35/19 rear. In my opinion, they look great and grip is incredible.

Hey guys.

Just got these installed. All I have right now are crappy iPhone pics, so I will post up better pictures when I have time for a quick photoshoot.

Long story short, the 285's fit fine.

There is about a 1/2 cm (or less) of tire-wall sticking out past the rim (as expected). No sidewall bulge. Car handles great. Car looks fantastic. The 285/35 has a beefy sidewall, which makes the car look much more aggressive, similar to the stock 219 18" rims with the 265/40's. IMO, the 245/35 and 285/35 combo looks completely fine. Yes, the rear is slightly taller, but I'm dropped it and looks fantastic. I will be upgrading to a 255/35 in the front soon enough, as I feel the best look would be a 255/35 and a 285/35. However, running a 285/30 would still look completely fine. It's actually a bit shorter than the stock 265/35, but for those not going for the aggressive look, this tire is probably more for you!

Cheers.

I like the lower profile of the 30 series tire myself for the 285 rears. Here is my car with 255/35/19s and 285/30/19.

Not to mention the 285/35/19 is 2lbs heavier than the 285/30/19,while the 285/30/19 is usually only 1lb heavier than the 265/35/19.

Just my .02

Dave, do you encounter any DSC issues with that setup since it alters circumference?

TireRack told me that altering the rolling diameter stagger of 0.6" would cause DSC to intervene much more often. I.E., square setup or 255/35, 285/30.

I don't much care about it but it would be annoying to not be able to drive the car without turning DSC off.

Yes, the DSC is more intrusive. Its not that bad actually but I do notice that it will kick in with to much steering input with a set throttle.

If I was to do it again I am thinking of running the 19X10's up front as well with a 275/30/19. If not I will be switching to a 265/30/19 with the 9" front. This wouldn't give me the .5" I need in stagger of diamater but it would be better than the 26" front and 25.8" back.

Dave your current setup with a drop would look great!

And yes, to each his own. I think the 285/30's look great, too. I'm a CCW guy and I also love the stock 219 w/ beefy tire look. This was definitely the route for me
Can't deny it would be great to have a slightly thicker tire up front, too! Can we fit 265/35's up front with the stock 8.5" rim?

255s max for a 8.5" wide wheel.

I actually just pulled the trigger on some 255/40/19's for the front as well.
Again, this is what the M5 uses for it's stock setup. Here are the specs I'll be running:

This is going to look so aggressive! w00t.

I thought I'd chime in on this.

I just installed 285/35/19's on the stock rears. Looks fantastic. Obviously not everyone is a fan of a thicker sidewall. If you are, this setup is right up your alley.

As of right now I have Continental CS3's up front (245/35/19's). I cant definitely feel the car "shift" slightly from time to time due to difference in tread and wear. It's nothing major, but I decided to go with the same PS2 tire up front in a 255/40/19. I'm looking forward to the same sidewall thickness up front, increased grip, and uniform wear/tread.

Will chime in once the fronts are installed next week.

Good luck with a 255/40/19 in the front. That large of a diameter will rub the liner like crazy! Are you sure that you didn't get a 255/35/19?

Haha, I like living on the edge, boys
Let's see if it works.

The diameter is 1.2" larger than stock, that's .6" on either side.

Also, as I posted above, the the sidewall thickness and diameter of the 255/40 and the 285/35 are almost identical.
To my recollection there is no difference in construction of the liner on the front/rear. The only difference is width, and my stock fronts are tucking with the drop.
My ride height, even after the drop, looked like it could allow another 1" or so. It will be close!

EDIT: I just talked to Ben at TireRack. Really informative guy with some good insight. Up front, the liner is constructed slightly differently than the rear, only because the car is designed to have a taller tire in the rear.
He seems to think there is a chance it will fit, but after speaking with a member on the forum, it looks like i'll have to do a slight modification to the front liner to make it work.

I'll keep everyone updated

This issue has been discussed before. You can modify the liner all you want and you are not going to be able to make that large of a diameter tire fit up front. The part of the liner that it will hit (rear 4:00 position on Driver's side) is backed by metal. You will wear through the thin plastic in that place and then you will be hitting metal. I have read that there is a component behind that piece of metal which prevents you from modifying the metal. I know this from experience. I am hitting the liners today and have worn through in one spot to the metal. I'm running 275/30's which have a smaller diameter than your 255/40's (mine are 25.6). I will admit that my rubbing is probably due to the width and squareness of my tires (AD08's). If you don't care to utilize the full turning radius of your car then you can live with it.... Just trying to help save you the time and $ messing around with a tire size that has no chance of working.
