Aftermarket speaker adapters

Here's a set I had machined just as a prototype. The mounting holes for the aftermarket speaker was not machined out in the prototype so I drilled out my own. Eventually, I want to have an elongated hole for the speaker mounting holes similar to the holes shown for the door panel mounting bolts to accommodate a wide range of aftermarket speakers. Still need to test fit this prototype in the car though.

Beautiful work. I'm sure there'd be a decent demand for some of these.

Hopefully I'll have a chance to test fit next weekend. Then I can finalize the CAD drawings have the first batch made.

What are the chances you'll be able to do them with different mounting diameters? I REALLY want to see if I can get my OG Diamond DA4.6s in there. Worst case, I can use my 344is's or have Bing make me some small dash pods for my RS100s and I'll pick up some Scan rings. Too many choices! Too many choices!!! I don't even have the freakin' car yet! AHHHHHHH! LMAO

Looking at the specs on the DA4.6, the cutout diameter is only slightly larger but the depth would be a major issue for you at 57mm. The 344is barely fits and its has a 50mm mounting depth. I think you might be able to squeeze it in at 52mm but 57mm is pushing it. If I could have, I would have bought a pair of Seas W12CY but there's no chance in hell that would happen with a 66.5mm mounting depth. If you're sure it would fit, I can ask the machine shop if they would cutout a larger hole. According to the specs, its about 1/4" larger in diameter than the 344is cutout.

Crap, well if the depth is too much it's too much. No sense worrying about the diameter if it's not gonna fit anyway. Time to check the Renaissance 4" specs. At least I know the RS100s will fit no problem.

Test fitted the adapter this morning. Its tight but its a perfect fit. The a/d/s mids are 50mm deep. I'm not sure if it could accommodate 7mm more. When I put the door panel back on I pressed against the back of the weather barrier and there was a little give until I felt the window but I don't think it was 1/4".

Picture of the a/d/s installed on the door panel. I removed the front grill just to see if the driver was centered in the cutout and it was. I forgot to take a picture of that though.

The 344 is a great sounding mid. I had them in my GTI and I'm definitely going to give them some time in the M. You can usually find them on eBay.

Esotars eh? I'm picking up the final revision of the adapters tomorrow afternoon. It looks much different from the prototype. I'll post pics when I get them.

Take a look at Renaissance drivers. Rennaissance used to be Morel USA. In the same car that was running Esotar 2s then switched to Rennys the difference was night and day. I think I'm going to run the Renny 4 and one of their tweeters and if I can fit it, their 8. If not, I'll use a Hertz Space 8.

hopefully. i had 240gt's in my last car and was pretty happy. for some reason, they don't make 4" mids in the esotec line for some reason. also bought a pair of the focal 100 krs, but not sure which way to go.. decisions decisions.

what did you end up deciding on the under seat subs?

Look very similar to the old Morel RAW drivers that had similar model numbers.

I had the 240GTs and a 340 in my Passat. Wasn't a big fan of the MD140 or the MD140/2 though. Could have been the kick panel placement or the fact that the 140/2 is a horribly inefficient driver but it just woudln't get up and boogie and I had at least 350 Watts per side on them.

They basically are. And they sound like you wouldn't believe. The only thing I've heard that I liked better was the new front stage in Fred's (Fred Lynch, Arc Audio dir. of marketing) Passat. I'm not allowed to say what they are but they're drivers from a very, VERY expensive set of Danish home towers and the matching sub with a crap ton of power (like a 2300SE bridged per driver crap ton) with modded SEs. Then the 3 Arc 15s on the 4000SE for times when he wants to get REALLY silly... yeah, I LOVE the way that car sounds.

Depth wise you're right on the edge but when I test fit the a/d/s which are only 1mm shallower it didn't feel like I was at the absolute limit yet. Where are the mounting tabs for those drivers? I'm assuming its a separate peice that's not shown in those pics.

It's very easy. The biggest pain in the ass is disconnecting all the wire harnesses once you get the panel off. Even that is not that difficult though. BSW has a good step by step on how to do it. Check it out on their website
