Idle problems.

I know this issue has been discussed before so i'm not going to go much in it. My car during warm up sometimes goes from less than 500 rpm to all the way over 1100 rpm. My car is a 2012 and I only run ethanol free 93 octane. I called my dealer to try and get this fixed and they told me it sounds normal (not to me). He told me without a check engine light he couldn't do much, but he told me to fill up with midgrade (89 with 10% ethonal) for 2 tank fulls and if that doesnt help to call them. I was wondering if this will do more harm then good and maybe if I should try another dealer?

Didn't know you could get ethanol free gasoline these days.

Do NOT fill 2 tanks with 89.

Do not use 89. It usually starts from 1200RPM and it settles between 500-700RPM. I think it is normal as long as it stays in this range.

yes but it goes from 1200 down to roughly 400 back up to 1200 and repeats itself till I get on the accelerator

he is using 93 so why are you saying its the gas? should he be using 104? i think you might have misread that first post

Mixture of 89... Just a merely suggestion to not mix.... At this point... Stay and use one gas and should notice after a week...also I would also use another gas station.... A lot of things that can cause this at this point start with obvious...

If that doesn't work it might be the idle valve

But op mine did the same thing and it was my low pressure sensor

Just wait for the engine light to come on cause if your idle keeps going up and down at any time of day cel will show up soon

I don't mix fuels. My choices are 93 (ethonal free) 89 10% ethonal, and 87. None of those include mixing from different pumps.

I think you misunderstood me. We have 3 pump choices. 93, 89, 87. I only use 93 *shell v power. At my gas station 93 is the only one that is ethonal free. My dealer is recommending me to use 89. 89 at my gas station has 10% ethonal.

Wtf dude I know about the choices stop putting it in.. Lol okok I mis understood ...

Ok now since that's cleared if u haven't gotten a cel yet like I said it might be your ICV

Wait until u get the engine light if u get the p0172 and p0175 it will be your low pressure fuel sensor...

One question though is this every start up or just in the morning?

By the way normal is when your rpm is at 500 700 but when it goes up to 1200 not normal might not show right away but seems like your low fuel sensor is about to go bad or the worst ICV....

Op, if you do some digging i could swear they had a software update for this issue, maybe someone will chime in with a service bulletin. your idle behavior is not normal, if its been like this over more then one tank of gas then i wouldn't be thinking bad gas. fyi, as i am sure you already know this but dont use anything less then 91 the dealer gave you terrible advice.

Ive only noticed it around start ups after it sitting outside for 8 hours during school. It's been getting progressivly worse. Today was especially bad and noticeable and i'm not sure if it's because it rained today. No cel yet but i'll scan for codes when I get one.

This happened to me and found out later that it was a bad gas... But since u said its getting worst and specially on cold start I'm guessing its low pressure sensor don't worry just wait for the cel to come out... And if it doesn't come out its the gas... Your idle should go back stable once u get new gas....hope it works out ...

It can't be the gas because this has happened during other tanks . We filled up our s550 at the same gas station within 10 mins of me filling up and it never had a problem. I'm guessing it's the idle valve control. It almost stalled out on me today and still no cel. It's probably going to be a wait and see thing. Hopefully no permanent damage.

i had my idle control valve and idle control actuator replaced on separate occasions, i wouldn't worry its a somewhat quick fix and common for these cars.

if it helps my 2008 ml350 does something similar and I think I remember hearing how it has to do with the engine needing to build up oil pressure or something :S
