My new Yokohama AD08 feels soft!

Hi!

Just shifted my old PS2:s to Yokohama AD08. I'm rolling on OEM 19" weels and kept the stock dimensions on the new tires.

I was expecting a sharper feeling, but got the opposite. The new tires feel softer than my old PS2:s. The grip is ok (compared to the very much worn out PS2:s), but I was expecting a much crisper feeling.

Current pressure: 38 front and 40 back.

Any ideas? Is a weel aligment typically necessary when going to more performance oriented tire?

Thanks,
J

^^ Yup. It's just the squishy "full tread" effect that you'll get with new tires. Older tires typically have a significantly less amount of tread, thus there is less flex in the actual tread and a more crisp response and turn in. The tires will get better with wear.

Tire Rack has some good info here: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tirete...e.jsp?techid=5

I am not too sure what size you got but sometimes playing with tire pressure helps too. the rear pressure seems quite high. too high of a pressure decreases effective contact patch sometimes. the pressure also gets affected with driving, so maybe take that down a notch and see how that feels. my 2 cents

Tire is still new so give it time to break in.

When the car has sat in the garage for few hours and cooled off. Check the tire pressure, it should be 34 PSI all around. Thats a good starting point.

Signes, Julius: I went for the stock dimensions, i.e 245/35/19 and 265/35/19.

Julius: Ok, my initial thought was to actually increase the pressure to tighten things up...

Maybe you guys are right about the full thread. My PS2:s were completely worn out. However, I expected the AD08 being so much stiffer "by design" as the difference would be smaller! I wouldn't have whine if I'd put on new PS2:s.

could also be the greasy mold compound, which takes a couple hundred miles to wear off.

lower psi to 34-35 all around. On these tires even a couple psi makes a big difference.

Also wait til they wear in a little

Enjoy

I love my Yokohamas! I got 255/35R19 and 275/35R19. Very sticky on the track. (Definitely want to break them in first.)

Your question, I think, is which tire is recommended between the PS2 and AD08. I think the PS2 is the better street tire, with more compliant ride and better wet traction, and quieter. The AD08 is stiffer, with better turn in and better dry traction. This has been my experience with these tires. I just installed a set of the new PSS, and it seems to be a very good tire also.

If you're mainly going to be street driving and you want comfort, performance, and longevity I'd look into the new Michelin PSS.

However, if you're going to be tracking your car semi-often and want a tire that you can drive on the streets as well I'd get the AD08s.

I don't think you can go wrong with either. If you're not going to be hitting up the track I'd get the PSS.

Ad08 is a wonderful tire. You need to drive on them a bit to get ride of the outer layer. Once you get to the real rubber and heat up the tires they are amazing. I don't think street driving will really bring out the true potential of the tire however at the track, they will shine.

Agreed. If not going to track then would say going with the Michelin's would be best, track a few days and the AD08's will shine.

Give us more information about your setup.

What size/offset wheels are you running? And what suspension setup are you running?
