How long does a "good used M3" stay on the lot typically?

I saw an M3 yesterday that was super clean, one previous owner, low miles, and the right price. Basically everything I can possible ask for. But I have noticed that it's been in the dealer's possession for two months now. Should this be a red flag?

If you bought a used M3, would you mind sharing how long it was available for before you took it?

I think it depends on the dealer's pricing, reputation, and location. Also the overall condition of the car compared to the price.

Ouu, let me tell you, these babies are going like hot cakes. I'd say no more than 3 weeks.

Last summer, mine was on the lot for exactly one day. My sales guy didn't even know he had it yet, I found it and told him

That said, probably depends on the market. I live in a relatively small city, and inventory is limited.

Cheers

I purchased my last two M3's brand new ... the last one I returned to the dealer only since the wife decided to go to only one car (btw she changed her mind and we still have the DD) and I switched from MT to a DCT car.

The car returned was a 2012 M3 and when I returned her had only 2000 KM on the odometer. The car was on the lot for sale for over 3 months. Naturally this car was like brand new, I treat my cars with kid cloves.

I think, to get to your question, not everyone has this kind of money to purchase this high end car also the percentage of folks looking for a M3 is rather low. So a car like this on the lot for that period of time is in my opinion not that unusual.

Hope this helps.

I have to agree with this, in my case I think the dealers asking price was way too high, he must have lowerd the price and the car then sold.

My interlagos E90 sat for nearly 5 months before I lowballed and bought it. It was a tough car to sell during the winter months in a not so affluent area. Bulk of the cars sold are not M cars.

Snatched mine off the lot 5 days after it arrived. Many of the SA had no clue it arrived and was part of current inventory.

Mine was traded in for a new 911 on a Sunday. I saw it online on Tuesday and bought it on that Wednesday. I had been looking for a while and found that sedans, if well loaded, turned around very quickly.

I've seen them go same day and I've seen them sit. The local dealership here has a 2011 w/40k on it for about 4 months. The price keeps dropping and no one has picked it up.

Mine was on the lot for 1 day

There was an '09 E90 that was local to me, it was on the lot for 7 months (Maserati dealer) and they did not want to deal. I'm glad they didn't, because I got my '10 for less, even with CPO.

Mine sat on a lot for 45 days. It was however on a Toyota/Scion lot. People don't go to a Toyota/Scion dealer to buy a BMW, never mind a M3. Car is loaded and passed my mechanics inspection with flying colors. Since it sat so long, I got it at auction price. Sitting is good for you, not for the dealer.

i contacted the used dealer who had my m3 probably the day they got it. i was flying home from europe and spoke to them from heathrow. the next day i went to see the car and we agreed on price (it was already priced aggressively so that took 1 minute). then i picked up the car a couple of days later after they had done the initial service and cleaned it up.

that being said, we had looked at another m3 at the local bmw dealer that had been there all summer. nice car but no upgraded audio, plus a price that was stupid high..so it sat there. it eventually sold, but i have no idea when. i think dealers will often put a really high price on used cars to see if they can get someone to overpay, and with interest rates so low now their carry costs aren't that high...so they can sit for a while. when they get tired of playing games, they lower the price to the market and the car sells quickly at that point.

Would you believe a dealer that says he is taking a loss on the sale?

From the little bit of research that I have done and contacting different dealers here I Missouri and Kansas it seems they go within hours to two weeks depending on configuration mileage and such.

How long a car stays at a dealership will depend on the PRICE, condition, mileage, timing and location. I just brought my M3 Sedan 2 weeks ago. I took it off the lot in less than 5 days. I didn't want anyone else taking the car from me because THIS was the one I had been looking for (low mileage, ZCP, DCT, Space Grey, Nav,PDK, EDC, headted seats). With that said, I had been looking for a similar car for over 3 months.

You need to look at each car and the dealer's asking price. There are some dealers asking for more than $63,000 for a low mileage 2011. I brought mine for < $57,000 with 7500 miles. Good Luck!

My 0.02

Dave
