E90 M3 1577 Miles - Engine Malfunction

Well, I just dropped off my new M3 at my friendly neighborhood BMW dealer because it went into “limp mode” on my way to the office this morning.

It displayed “Engine Malfunction! Reduced Power” on the iDrive display, the redline indicator swung way over to 4000 rpm and the engine vibrated (and vicariously the whole car) noticeably at idle while waiting for traffic lights.

I must admit, I’m a little concerned. I followed break-in to the letter and just started to drive the car more aggressively following my 1200 mile service. It sat unused in the garage all weekend until my commute to work this morning and it seemed fine until about 5 miles into my commute.

The dealer was very accommodating and provided an x3 loaner to get me to the office but I still have not heard from them as to what the issue may be. I’ll keep you all posted as news becomes available.

Sorry to hear that. Good luck.

Maybe bad gas. I hope it is not the fuel pump problem that plague the 335.

High Pressure Fuel Pump was my first thought as well. The dealer said that they have not seen that issue on the new M3.

They did say that BMW had them fill the tank with gas (I was at a quarter tank with the "reserve fuel" warning).

Nope. My degree is from Hope College's rival.

Another user posted with the same issue IIRC. It ended up being the fuel. Apparently, BMW had the fuel analyzed and its Methanol content was WAY over the 10% max. Wonder if that will be the case with yours?

Let us know how it turns out.

Thanks - I'll keep you posted. My dealer has been great about calling me every couple of hours even though they don't know what the issue is yet.

I'd be very surprised/perplexed if it turned out to be bad gas. I was just under a quarter tank when the issue occured and I always use BP Ultimate which is 93 octane here in MI.

So they tell you...in Ohio...no county tests the octane content...only the volume/accuracy of the pump...

Very few counties require octane testing

The other guys gas was 20% ethanol...and he said that he only used premium also

I think people are probably referring to my post a few weeks back.

http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=145560

Long story short, I was hearing a very loud ticking/clattering noise on startup. Went away once warm. I didn't get a limp-home mode or CEL, however. After a fuel analysis, it ended up being attributed to excessive ethanol content (+15%) in the gas. Dealer siphoned out the bad gas, put in new gas, and I haven't heard it since. Good luck and please keep us updated.

My bad.. from memory, I thought your car went into limp mode. Also, I said Methanol...lol. Yeah. That would PHUCK up your fuel system. lol. Geez...time for some coffee.

Curious to see what is the case with this one though....interesting. Maybe a software glitch? Time will tell....

Here is an update as of Noon Eastern Time today:

The dealer is waiting for a call back from someone they called “the Regional Technical Manager”. Apparently they don’t know what’s wrong and the information they have is somewhat conflicting. Apparently one bank of cylinders is reporting normal operation and the other is reporting all “zeros” - whatever that means.

They assured me everything is covered under warranty and promised to call me once they heard from the senior resource at BMW they mentioned.

Again, my dealer has been very nice to deal with but it appears that my issue may be well beyond bad fuel or a failed fuel pump. The current M3 is still a new product for BMW NA and they appear to have little documented technical data to draw upon – hence the appeal to a higher authority. I just hope the car comes back soon and runs as well and strong as it did before this incident.

reporting zeroes i imagine is reporting failure. sorry to hear that about your M3. i hope it's not a huge issue, and i definitely hope it's not a common thing with M3's.

The M cars do not use direct injection as with the N54 6cyl. The M3 has conventional fuel pumps.

Thanks for asking. Unfortunately they still have no idea what the issue is. Again, because of this being such a new product they tell me they are being very cautious and constantly checking-in with senior technicians at BMW. I was told to expect more information tomorrow.

I’m becoming a bit discouraged that after having my car for more than 48 hours they still do not know what is wrong - let alone can tell me when I’ll have my car back. I just hope it runs just as well and as fast as it did before this incident once returned. In the meantime, I’ll continue being patient and try to enjoy the X3 loaner they gave me to use.....

It sounds like one bank of cylinders are simply not firing. It could be an electrical issue--maybe those cylinders are not getting sparked. Something like this happened to my E46. There was a general 3-series recall on the coils. I didn't respond in time and the engine started running really rough one morning. They changed the coils and the issue was resolved. Good luck.
