M3 VS M3 around the Nurburgring
Will the next gen M3 (F3X) be faster, the same, or slower than the current gen M3 (E9X) around the Nurburgring?
Here's why the question is posed: This question and answer was taken from a recent interview of Dr.M. Q: Every car after the E30 M3 has been heavier and the problem solved with more power. Has M lost its plot? A: We're working on the lightweight issue, but it's an uphill battle and it's not so easy. He doesn't sound so confident. - - - Last edited by R A W L S; 02-04-2011 at 09:24 AM.. |

i want to think it will be faster in hopes that BMW M division keeps evolving and continues to raise the bar. There are lighter and stronger materials coming out as well as newer technology that is always being invented, all this makes me think that it will improve over our current set ups. but we will have to see.

IMO it will absolutely be faster... not necessarily a better car. Hopefully better but that is a subjective thing. I, however, am optimistic that it will be both faster, lighter and "better".

i would be curious to know the reason behind the two who voted slower. Maybe they have some good points that we all are missing?

This is a stupid thread, since it's based completely on speculation. Let's vote on something more tangible...who is more hot...Brooklyn Decker or Olivia Wilde?

Faster for the 1st lap, then the block is going to melt due to the turbos

I've also been thinking the new F30 looks massive in spy photos, which usually means heavier - every M3 has gotten heavier. So probably heavier, coupled with a six cyl turbo, ie, a smaller, high strung engine, really makes me wonder about it's track capabilities. I also get the impression from Dr. M's statements and others that they will be extremely challenged to make a faster track car than the e9X because of the pressures and expectations to build a bigger car, that gets better gas mileage. I think if it is faster, it will only be marginally faster around the Ring, and even then I fear it will overheat and go into limp mode. |

Each generation of the M5 has the same challenges yet M-division always comes through. Hes right though, its not easy.
Will bet the new, heavier, larger v8TT M5 will quicker than the outgoing V10 M5. Same will happen with the M3.

They have no choice. It MUST be faster or they the competition will beat them down.
Fortunately, Forced Induction gives the engineers a lot to work with as far as adding power. I'm expecting similar gains such as the difference in E92 vs E46. I personally would bet on 450ish hp, 7500 redline, 200 lbs less weight, and a lot more torque. I'm also expecting price to increase by 10% or more (unless the EU gets smart and starts devaluing the Euro some)

It'll be quicker thats for sure, but I'm a true NA fan, and if I want faster Ill SC my M3, and save up for my GT3RS, in worse case Ill go with benz! And for getting turboed, just look at the 335i, just asking for more things to mess up as well. We'll see!

Although we don't know much about the upcoming car, I personally think that BMW ///M should be aiming to be around 7:50 for the F3X M3. Since that is the time of the E46 M3 CSL (on cups mind you), and 997.2 C2S PDK (also on cups?). Hopefully this is not wishful thinking on my part! But it would sure say something about how this car would FEEL on the street, as well as a statement of intent by ///M on their FI products.
The CTS-V did it in 7:59. So I expect the M5 to be anywhere 7:55-7:58. The car albeit heavy, should feel very direct on the street . |

I really doubt its going to be lighter. Being a bigger car, the body will definitely be heavier. If anything I can see BMW getting close to the current e9x weight, but no way lighter unless there is a significant price increase. Maybe they'll take a few pointers on Audi and the S4 and make it cheaper than the previous model :P

I don't see it being lighter. It's gonna be bigger, with more gizmos and more safety features. Those don't come for free. They'll add more carbonfiber because they've a big factory now. Things may cancel out or so, at the end I think F3x M3 won't gain as much over E9x M3. In a way, same as E9x M3 being heavy compared to regular E9x, but not so much thanks to lots of aluminum parts and carbonfiber roof.
