A bit disconcerting
This is from Jimpower over at M3Forum:
"Never buy first year or even second year production cars....Im a tech and a major BMW dealerships and just like when the e65 came out we were flooded with problems..02 and 03 model year were horrible, but once they fixed some of the mechanical and software issues, they are pretty reliable cars. However if I planned on keeping my M5, I wouldnt do it without CPO...." |

Yeah, there might be issues with a new release, but BMW will take care of them, so I don't think that's good enough of a reason to wait around. DCT might be something to be careful with though. We'll see... |

not getting the first model year or so is a smart idea. its not specific to BMW though, to any car. especially german cars with lots of electronics, there are alot of things that can go wrong. im a tech for MB and the 211 e class had tons of problems initially....ive even seen a PDI with problems.

Good question. You can chalk that up to confused writing. Actually, I have wanted an M since the E30 and became really excited around 97 when the E36 M3 sedan came out... a stealth family hauler. Been trying to save money ever since, inspite of major barriers such as graduate school and house expenses. Just hoping M would put out another sedan version once finances vastly improve.

There is some merit to what the OP said. But that being said by the time we get ours in the USA there will alreay be thousands world wide. Personally I dotn think there were many problems noted with 95 or 01 M3's. In fact the 95OBDI M3 was the E36 M to own IMO.

Sorry. It's funny coming back to a regular forum like this when people on offtopic.com forum will simply laugh at other's misfortune and that's the norm. Seriously, you will be the first to have one and you will have great fun with the car. I wouldn't lose sleep or care much what others say because its under warranty.

On the engine and a lot of the electronics including EDC we have the benefit of the M5 being a testing ground. Oh and there was not many problems with the 01 E46 M3 except the hundreds of engines that literally blew up. M is going to be really extra cautious this time around with the car for the sake of their reputation on their flagship car. |

Although I do agree with the concept of never buying the first year of production of any car, in the case of the E92 M3 I'll be waiting to buy a couple of years for additional reasons. Not only I do not want first year production woes, I don't want to be paying the "first sucker on the line" markups either.
Also, BMW likes to start adding features standard around the third year so it actually pays nicely to wait, especially if "under the table" incentives are also part of the deal. |

Yeah, they replaced them. And when all is said and done, that's literally the worst that could happen. You might be without your car for a few weeks and you'll get it back with a warrantied engine with 0 miles on it.

Looking at fall of 08 for the e90 M3 so engine will have been out for more than a year. Seriously considering DCT but don't think I would bite on that option, unless I were to wait for Spring 09 to give it at least a year to work out the bugs. Plan on whatever car I purchase, keeping it for good. Can't stomach the depreciation hits. Thus, my concerns about electronic aids and long term reliability.

Some of you waiting 3-4 years for the car to have all the problems "ironed out" will be faced with spy shots of the new new M3 popping up on the web, and possibly an even tougher decision.

Exactly. There will always be a better car or less-error-prone car coming soon in the future. There is no light at the end of the tunnel, ladies and gentlemen.

hmm good point.. so just buy a 2005/2006 e46 m3 and be done with it then? that way someone else takes the depreciation hit, no need to wait for e90 issues to be ironed out, still got a few more yrs on warranty and it's still an awesome car.. not to mention price is dropped due to e90 coming out.. it's got me thinking

... i've waited years for this car. if i were part of the normal consumer contingent, waiting a year or two for all the kinks to be worked out might be an option. but i'm not. i'm an enthusiast. i don't need the car. i want it. and while i consider myself a very logical person, it's passion that is driving my decision here. kinks or not, i'll be buying this car as soon it's made available to me. i'll let the warranty cover the kinks, and let the logical consumer look on at me wide-eyed, as i roar by with a big grin on my face.
