Don't buy overpriced Wheel Insurance

I already managed to curb a RIM at less than 800 miles. Grr. Next time I guess I'll be more careful.

My tire and rim insurance covers curb rash, I made the guy repeat it to me 100 times before I signed. Sorry yours doesn't.

If you bought genuine BMW wheel and tire insurance, you can cancel it at any time and they will refund you the prorated balance.

A single rim for an M3 does not cost that much. While I have an 2011 E90M3 ZCP on order, I have also ordered 2 brand new additional ZCP rear wheels (19x10-ET25) since I plan on running that size rim on all four corners. I paid $472 per wheel. Add the cost of adding a tire ($325) and for about $800 you can have a spare wheel and tire sitting in your garage.

This is the same question I was asking in the wheel and tire section. Some people are able to get new rims after getting curb damage, and some are not. You'd think that the fine print would be the same since it's from BMW. Does anyone have a scan of the fine print and is able to post it up? I'm very curious to what it actually says.

Each dealer has completely different insurance policies that are done by dozens of different small companies. It's designed to be a total scam. Wheel and Tire insurance makes sense in places where roads are terrible like NY & NJ if it is offered for a reasonable price, which I'd say is about $400 a year and offers full coverage in any situation not just road hazards, but while I've heard of good and affordable programs like this, I have never actually figured out where to specifically buy them.

So yeah wheel insurance is a total and utter scam in the vast majority of cases done by crackpot companies looking for a quick buck that severey limits what they pay out because of shady contracts. With one company I researched that did the insurance for my local dealer, I found out that their profits were 5 times their payout, and that's after 33% of the sale going to the dealer, after administrative fees they were still making 3 times their expenses as profit. It's really ridiculous.

Interesting. So I guess it boils down to having to do your research on the specific company you go with, if you do opt in. I've already seen responses from multiple members who have had no issue with the insurance what so ever. And some members with bad experiences like the OP. In the end, read the fine print and know what you're buying.

I'm a lawyer, so I should have known to read the fine print -- it doesn't cover curb rash. That was really the only reason I got it. Tires can be easily patched for $20 most of the time (unless it's a run-flat, which cost me a fortune on my previous 335i), so I basically just paid $1700 for nothing.

I'm sure you guessed it, but I already managed to curb a RIM at less than 800 miles. Grr. Next time I guess I'll be more careful.
Yes it is a rip off I did not get it on my M3

i got it on my m3 and its already paid itself off.. but thats probably because i am from new york and the roads here have been as bad as they have ever been.. my insurance is from BMW directly ( which is new) because when i bought my 335 the wheel insurance was through a different company even though i got the insurance from the bmw dealership. I can also say it does NOT cover curb rashes but does cover bubbles on the tires, cracked rims, and flat tires being that you have a certain amount of tread left. but yea to me the wheel and tire insurance was WELL worth it..

I bought the 5 years, unlimited cap BMW Tire Insurance for ~1k.

So far, three new tires (local construction crews dumping roofing screws on the road) and one new wheel (wouldn't hold air). No out of pocket, so issue.

Have four years remaining on the policy. A good deal for me.
