Air intake simple mod
I live in cold and wet holland (Europe) and sometimes when i drive off...i see a spray of water coming out of my supposed air intake on the hood...
How can water come flying out of the intake when i pull up hard? When i got my 2000Km service i got a good look at the intakesystem when te car was on the bridge. I was supprised to see that the left front hole in the bumper is also an air intake. And that when the car is up in the air you can look through the intake in the bumper and look out through the 'intake' on the hood. I know the Ram air concept...but the 'intake' or maybe better the 'exhaust' on the top of the airbox makes you lose pressure...Right? So i taped the hole....i'm gonna do some more High speed runs tonight...maybe it makes a differance. You can't test it on the dino...I have a stretch of highway where i normally can't go faster then 310KM/H with my E92 M3. I'll keep you posted Jr |

Ya, this topic has come up in the past!
I also notice that after it rains or snows and I start driving quick, the water sprays out of the hood vent and onto my windshield quite often! Btw, welcome to the forum!!

BTW anyone know where I can do the mod that makes this water fly out of my intake hole on the hood. I think this plus the mod of the smoke out of the side vents would make my car utterly BADAZZZZZ.

Some decent discussion on the "hood-vent" and air-flow through the airbox here...
http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthr...=ram+air+waste I thought about adding a 'flapper' valve on the hood-vent to stop air from escaping the box...but it got cold...perhaps in the Spring.

LOL!! You would think BMW engineers looked into this and everyone wants to add flapper valves, block off an engineered air-intake vent. For real fella's. The water you see comming out is water that has built up arond the kidney hole and is pushed out of the hole due to airflow over the hood and air that is comming through the airbox pushing that water from around the rim out. Not the airbox filling up with water.
It's possible under heavy rain conditions for water to run up the inner-lower portion of the airbox being pushed by airflow through the front vent. But the box is designed so water does not touch the air filter and will not affect the engine. I'm sure if someone drove into a deep puddle you might get a different result but it's perfectly fine. For as much as it rains in the UK, I've had no issues. In fact, I even opened up the filter box after driving in the rain one day and the filter element was bone dry. Cheers!! |

Sorry but I think closing that hood vent is a stupid idea. I am sure BMW engineers know 1000x more than just about anyone on here when it comes to designing an efficient intake. A V8 that revs to 8300 rpm and makes 104 hp/liter needs a good amount of air otherwise the engine would run out of breath far earlier. There is a reason the vent is there.

Ok i tested my mod back to back.
The test was on a highway close to my house. I never got past the speed of 310Km/h on that road....because the road runs out....into a field with cattle. Left kidney hole taped closed. Run 1: 307 Km/h Run 2: 306 Km/h Standard Run 3: 305 Km/h Run 4: 307 Km/h No fucking differance....this pisses me off!! How can this be possible?? I want to do some better testing with pressure gauges. |

The hood acts as a vacuum at higher RPMs. Why would anyone want to suffocate their engine by restricting air into their car?
I'm pretty sure the M engineers know more about cars than most of us do.

I wonder if BMW engineers every read this board. They must be laughing their asses off at this thread thinking about some guy out smarting their design with a role of tape hahahaha.
Does anyone really think BMW designed a car and then said "hmmm maybe if we put holes in the hood we can decrease the performance. Good idea let's do that"

At the moment, as far as i could test it...they dont increase or influence performance. So just for the record...the engine doesn't suffocate at high RPM or high speed with the kidney closed. I think it's strange. And will do some more tests with pressure gauges. |

I give up! I can't figure out what the hell those holes are for!! Someone smarter than me must have figured out a good reason for them so I'm just gonna drive the car and shut the F*&^ up |
