Importing less oil will mean it is less susceptible to volitility due to unrest overseas, but the cost of domestic production will be higher on average than imported sans unrest. This country is in the condition it is right now due to the political movement over the last 30 years to deregulate everything, which is the important issue while the rubes base their votes upon abortion, etc. Both parties are at fault....the Repubs for pushing these policies and the Dems for going along, while displaying the populist rhetoric in public. Both parties suck the tit of corporate America; one is just more blatant about it than the other.

The government, ie "the country", cannot "make" oil companies increase domestic production in the face of the current policy climate in place, that we as a country collectively voted for whether we realized it or not. Thus, your rant is fallacy IMO. Now we hypocritically bitch about this dilemma, when we would be bitching for paying higher gas prices if domestic production was mandated. We are a country of hypocrites that want something for nothing, and if people think American oil companies will collectively increase domestic production and be "good Americans" then that is insane. Somebody wouldn't play the game, and their gas would be cheaper and that station would have lines around the block, full of people ie "the country" bitching about the middle east, while the stock of the "good American" companies tank. This whole situation is fucked up, and I bet there is collusion abound in the industry as well. The good thing about democracy is you get what you deserve. That is also the bad thing about democracy.

I paid $3.89 for Chevron super unleaded 2 days ago in Houston. The Shell station down the street which I usually buy from I think is about $3.80 right now.

I filled up in North Palm Beach while I was up there for work on Friday for $4.25 a gallon for 93. Drove past a Shell today back home near Ft. Lauderdale and it was $4.03 a gallon for 93.

Usually varies between $ 9-10 per gallon. That means a full tank will cost $ 140-150. Prices keep going up all the time..
