Un impressed with my PSS
Well, I have had my new PSS on since late March. I took off my DWS Ext Conti all weather and put on my second set of rims with newly installed PSS. In the first moments of driving I found the them to be greasy. I posted here and people told me to expect it for 1000 miles or so. I expected this with the new tires and residual releasing compounds of having just come out of its mold.
After at whole summer of driving it has never improved. The back slips and slides during moderate and heavy sharp turns. In November I went back to my winter setup with the DWSs and the Change is quite noticeable. The Contis even it is al l weather, sticks better than the PSSs. I have owned this car since it was new, and it came with PS2s, that set had crazy amount of grip, at all times in any situation during summer driving. My second summer sets were also PS2s, and they performed the same as the first set. Now on my third summer set with PSSs and I am disappointed. This is after a summer of driving on a brand new set of four tires. My three-year old DWS winter set is out performing my PSS! What the Hell? I can't wait to get rid of these and go back to PS2s or PS3s.

That is really weird OP. I have both PS2 and PSS on different sets of rims and in the same sizes (OEM). My PSS have more grip under all conditions (especially wet/cold)... so much so that I use PS2's when I want to drive the car with less grip.
Check your tire pressure. If they are not hugely overinflated, then you probably have a defective set. Conti DWS are good tires, but they do not have the grip level of Conti DW's or other max. performance summer tires. |

Yeah, I thought so too. All the turns on my 40 mile drive to work, I am able to make at X miles per hour on the PS2s without slipping, sliding, or squealing, where this summer my PSSs are doing all of that at X-(3 to 5) miles per hour less.
The Contis are also taking these corners with much less fanfare and certainly more predictably than my PSSs.

What temperature are you driving at? Conti DWS will probably have better grip when it is very cold than PSS. But PSS have better cold weather grip than PS2. |

Yeah, tire pressure all remain at 35 psi. Summer temps are 70s in eve and 90s during day. Fall and spring it's 40s at night and 60s during day for the times the PSSs where running. My Contis temps run from 30s at night to 50 during day.
I bought my set from Tire Rack in spring of 2011 when they first came out. I was planning on replacing my second used set of summer PS2s then, but I was able to stretch out the PS2 use until winter came. So I didn't need to replace my summer tires until this past spring. Anyone one knows the warranty on these tires? It still has 80 percent treads left.

However it will be very difficult to prove to them that the tires have less grip than they should. there are too many variables and your subjective feedback will likely not be sufficient. you could maybe appeal to Michelin customer service to try to get you a replacement set. |

I have had a set of PSS for about 2 mts and find the grip (wet or dry) to be at least on par with the two previous sets of PS2. I also have one wet track day on the PSS when new, and they performed better than expected. Not sure why yours are not performing.

I've had my M3 since new for a long time, all of my other vehicles wear Michelin. But for some reason my PSSs perform less than stellar and I am trying to figure out why. One tire out of a few thousands they make at a batch seems impossible. There should be others experiencing what I'm experiencing. This is a set of four btw.

When I bought my car (used) it had PS2's all around, I found the car very tail happy and it would step out on me even during mildly spirited street driving. I put PSS's on the rear, and have not been able to break the rear end loose with the same type of driving. Under hard turns, the front actually pushes now (with PS2's on the front). I have found the PSS's far superior to the PS2's, which I didn't think was possible. These tires are very sensitive to alignment, however. My car is beautifully dialed in with very minimal toe. You may have poor aligment which could be steering the car under load. Don't give up on them...they are fantastic tires that gip almost as good as R compound tires.
Also, are you running stock widths? I have found that the PS2's and the PSS's have soft sidewalls that need to be slightly stretched to have effective cornering stiffness. If they are bulgy (tire on too narrow of rim) then they feel mushy. |

This is definitely not normal...here's something seriously wrong...
My M came with PS2,than i put on the PSS....and "WOW" amazing grip in wet and dry conditions...about 15-20 % more grip...best tire i ever driven with. So...i advice you...go back to your tire dealer and explain your problem !!! 100% SURE....THIS IS NOT NORMAL.... Last edited by ///M Power-Belgium; 12-14-2012 at 09:32 AM.. |

I will say that I am pretty impressed by the Conti DW as a street tire. I have the same width RS3 on right now and they are not as good as a street tire. I haven't tried either on the track where the RS3 should shine. And I haven't tried PSS at all.

We are definitely interested in following up on this, because this does not seem normal. Are you able to post the complete details of your setup? Wheel sizes/widths, offsets, weights (if known), the tire sizes you have been running, any mods to the car, and anything else you can think of that might be relevant.
Also, please email me with your order information so that I can note these issues on your account and double check on what we sent.

I'm running PSS on both of my M3s as well as my Mini Cooper S - have nothing but great things to say about this tire! One of my M3s came with PS2s and the other with Contis...PSS are a much higher performing tire in all categories than the PS2s and Contis.

I am interested in this subject as well. Coming from the Conti SC3 to the PSS the sidewalls seem to have a little more give which helps with predictability at the limit. Initially I thought the PSS felt greasy, but after getting used to them I feel they do have more grip although the sidewalls being a little more flexible make them a little less responsive on turn in and quick direction change.

PSSs
Putting mine on soon to replace Vreds. I like the Vreds better than PS2s, so I'm hoping these will be yet better. Will report back my impressions.

Well, goes to show you that not everyone's popo meter is the same. Go with what feels best to you. For me, the PSS's have been the best tire to date for my driving style. Just curious, are you comparing like sizes?

I've had great experiences with the PSS's over the PS2's.
They do get a little 'overheated' on the track sometimes, but for a street tire it's one of the best choices. The turn in feels great, and they are less expensive and last longer than the PS2's.

One thing to note: I drive my M3 in the same manner as I drive when it had two sets of PS2s, during the summer and even when it is wearing Contis. My car is completely stock. Their is nothing wrong with my alignment, since the issue went away or improved after I put the winter set on. My car tracks straight on level surface, and when I took off he PSSs, I inspected/cleaned them prior to putting them away. They were absolutely evenly worn all around on all four tires. Tischer of Silver Spring put the PSSs on for me and complete an alignment.
Now I will also mention, if I were to drive my M3 like I drive my Camry or Sienna I would never even notice the difference in performance. But this is a high performance sedan with summer performance tires, therefore pushing my equipment closer to the edge of it's capability I am able to experience the difference in performance.
