BMW factory paint is very thin!

Okay so i had a one inch scratch on my passenger side skirt. It was about 2mm wide, pretty wide for a scratch and it was down to the plastic. I decided to use some touchup paint, clear coat then wet sand (2000grit) it smooth. I put 2 layers of paint, 1 layer of clear, and let it cure for a couple days. After 3 days, I decided to give it a light wet sand. I honestly used about 10 medium pressure wet sand strokes and i started seeing black plastic. the small scratch widened to a 4mm patch of plastic.

My other cars (Audi, Porsche, ford and older bmw) never had an issue with wet sanding.

I guess its going in for a respray...a thicker respray.

My paint was measured at 89 microns overall and pretty consistent across the entire car. The detailer said in his experience most are in the 120 to 140 range.

2000 grit soaked in water. And I' 've painted and wet sanded many car parts through the years. I agree this should not have happened.

So the question remains. Did you buy the car used and the previous owner didn't mention that car was resprayed and they did a poor job.

Glad you are getting a respray. I am very curious as to how it went down to the plastic.

I amd the second owner of the car. I was assured of no accidents and no respraying of the panels. Although, you never know these days. Also im pretty sure it was the orginal as the underside was well dinged up with road debris.

After searching through multiple posts of the oem paint thiness issues, im pretty sure bmw does skimp out on a few layers of paint.

My car is now at my favority body shop getting a several panels resprayed and my front bumper.

Note: i had my rear bumper resprayed last year after I got a big chip. 6 months later my wife scratched the clear after pulling luggage out of the trunk. I wet sanded that area and it held up just fine. My body shop puts a lot of layers of paint and clear for me to do a few paint corrections down the road.

From what I have read, BMW paint is very hard which is good but it comes out of the factory thinner than other cars. Just a precaution to those that need to wet sand their cars. Use a paint meter before you do.

Sorry to hear that. However this isnt the first time ive seen lack of paint on new bmw's. my friend just got a brand new F30 328i and the rear bumper looked kind of porous which was clearly lack of clear coats. I told him to take it back to the dealer to get it fixed and they said it was normal

Yes its sad. But no worries on my side. My car is an 08' and its due for fresh paint. I called the shop and told him just do a total respray of the entire car. I want thick layers of clear. Should last me a good 4 yrs or so.

I just want to warn others to watch your use of strong polish compounds or wet sanding.

Thick layers of clear coat should last you way more than four years.
Shouldn't it? :/

Yes indeed it should. But I am a freak when it comes to taking care of my paint, so i always think of the worst case scenario.

BMW = soft and thin paint and soft windshield. Gets pitted too easily.

I couldn't agree with you more. I have literally hundreds of chips on my hood and almost no paint left on the front bumper.

My windshield has so many chips that I can barely see out at nite time, especially when it rains. Totally unacceptable…

Omg so true about the windshield. I barely drive the car and it is already pitted. Probably replace that in a few short years

Some 911 owner showed me a film you can place on the windshield during track season. It might be worth a shot. Have you heard of it?

I saw that on a motortrend track shootout video. I think it was a clear bra. They said it was not as clear as glass and you can see waves. They took it off right after the track session. Not sure if its worth it.

Ive heard of that stuff but no I wouldn't use it. Pitting annoys me but it I'm not that anal about. It hasn't reached the point of interfering with my driving yet

Intriguing product here with Diamondite Shield, could at the very least help slow down the effects.
