couldn't have said it better myself, truth be told, the first 2 pages I actually thought, ok, OP might be a decent candidate for a nice car, (I began to lose this feeling when I read about his 2 accidents (his fault or not)) but given the last page of this thread, and moving away for 2-4 years. OP, you and your father would have to be complete morons to purchase any car (especially $50 000 one) knowing that you are going away, you said your father would be driving it?? But you said hes not a car guy, so he probably wouldn't care to go pick up the car on a Saturday afternoon to take out for the day. Your money, your problem! good luck!

Hey Guys, I think we should cut the OP a break here. I had some private conversations and he seems to be decent person. His point was that he's going away for work and he will be paying back for the car to his Father, plus his Father will be driving the car as well when he's away. Maybe his response wasn't the most appropriate but his heart seems to be in the right place.
Lets just stick with the original question, what is the best car for him: a m3 or m6.

PLEASE READ! stepdad isn't a car guy...my dad very much so loves cars..and is currently debating with me between whether we should be getting a coupe or convertible..i'd rather have the coupe because of the carbon fiber roof and lighter weight...i can see where he's coming from though. especially if it's going to be his weekend car. theres nothing stupid about this. i'll be driving the car for a few months, when i go away he'll be driving it on the weekends...whats so stupid about that?

Nothing stupid....get the M3 though. In four year when you get back it would still be a pretty fresh model, as opposed to the M6.

Again, why get a car, leave a few months later and let someone who is "not into cars" maintain and drive it while you're gone?
I bought my M3 after 15 months in Iraq as there was no point in getting it and letting it sit / and let it depreciate before I left. I am now trying to convince my wife to drive it so it will not be a "garage queen" when I go to Afghanistan. These cars need to be driven more than every once in a great while. To let it sit, is just a waste on many levels. I am just not getting the logic here... I would go with the M3 for the reasons above, but I would make the purchase later in cash, than sooner and not drive it.

To the OP, Google M5 Florida Accident.
The kid was driving an M5, lost control, launched it, split it in half and killed 3 other people with him. I think anyone who buys their child a 500hp car is an idiot. I don't care how responsible you think you are, you mix testosterone, immaturity, lack of driving experience/skill, and a 500hp vehicle and you're just waiting for a disaster. Ok, I'll get off my soapbox now. Get the 335.

BTW I'm headed to Afgahany in a couple of weeks. I know what it's like and believe me I'll be counting down the seconds until I get the hell out of there. It's no place to spend the beginning of your adult life especially considering you're not serving your country (comparatively to us in uniform).

If I were 18 and my dad would want to pay me a brand new M3... well I have to admit I would say yes and be very enthusiastic. So I will not judge you on that.
However, If I had an 18 year old I would certainly not buy him an M3. Not a new car and probably more a golf or a civic. The truth is you will make mistakes when you start driving. You will feel over confident and you will most probably have some sort of accident. You're better off learning in a 20k car than a 80k one. A 335i would be the best choice IMO however it's still overkill in my book. If I were you I'd get a fun young car like a mini cooper s or a gti or a wrx. And in 5 years when you come back get a brand new 2014 M3 :-) cheerio

My vote is for the M5, but that's just because I miss mine.
The E9x is a great M3. The M5 just had a much better interior. They each have their pros and cons. The M5/M6 will use much more gas. You have to get them higher in the rev range to really move. The M3 has more useable low end torque. And we all know that DCT is superior to SMG, even though I still have lots of love for SMG III. And I do remember the accident with the M5 in florida... that was terrible.

hmm I like the M6 SMG a lot but if taking turning is you thing then get the M3.
Think of one as a straight line car and one as a more fun in the turns type car.

Well, the OP came to us for our opinion; the consensus is that an 18 year old has no business driving any of his proposed choices. I consider our skepticism on-topic and admire the forum for demonstrating some maturity and responsibility for questioning his motives, which are typical teenage emotion, i.e. "I look good in it." He has no experience caring for a regular car; Dad's been for the 2 years he's been legally driving. He won't appreciate what he's getting into like most of the enthusiasts here, despite his claims to appreciate it more than the Dad purchasing it for him.
Just reading the criteria about whether or not he's going to "look good" in the car and not about any of the specific features he likes or what will suit his driving requirements makes me skeptical. I appreciate that he's going to Afghanistan (USN, I'm serving a year tour in Iraq right now) but the logical choice is to wait, buy the car while in-country to get it at the Military Sales rate (which US contractors are eligible for), and take delivery of a brand new car that he can contribute his hard-earned sweat overseas to and see how hard it is to get into one of these things. F*ck us? You came to us! You thought you were going to get advice and support; don't act butt-hurt for getting neither because a lot of people aren't as indulgent as your Dad is. If you had more experience, you'd know that the respect you want by the merit of your CAR comes from many, many other ways. I think most people on this board know it, which is why we're successful enough to own top-shelf BMW's. Rant complete.
