Aftermarket Clutch Stop review

i have gotten a few pms asking me about the clutch stop i have, so a review would be easier.

one thing i noticed after getting my m3 was the clutch engagement. first of all the spring made the clutch not as linear, and on top of that from the position of clutch fully depressed to the engagement point, it was quite a lot of "useless" travel. so it made shifting a bit slower and sometimes not as easy to predict. took me a while to get better, but especially 1st to 2nd shift it was a bit hard for my wife since she couldn't get the point.

after searching for some options, i landed on these stoppers:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/E9X-B...item35ac09578a

i went ahead and order it (14 bucks). it's been maybe 2 months since i had it? and i have been very very happy about the new stopper. my wife is saying the same as well. here's a few notes i have:

1) it's sooo easy to install. i have read on the eas one and looked at the bracket, given the location, angle, it's so hard to put in the bracket, not to mention so many people breaking theirs. the one i got is very easy, simple take out the old one and push in the new one. i didn't even have to take off any panels, i just felt in and took out the old one followed by pushing in the new one, 30 seconds

2) i haven't checked but i believe this one is cheaper than the one from eas (and a few others i found). that was the main reason i decided to give it a try (and i am glad)

3) the clutch travel distance is noticeably reduced. much shorter now, and it's much closer to the engagement point. i don't see any problem shifting (as long as depressed until clutch stops), and there is still a little distance from engagement point. but it becomes very short and very easy to catch

4) downshift and rev match is much easier now because the clutch is so close to engagement point now. my wife tells me she can feel i downshift faster now and very smooth

5) my wife says 1st to 2nd shift is very easy now, much smoother, very natural now. this is something she's been struggling

6) this doesn't affect the hill stop function at all. as long as the clutch is depressed until it stops, and brakes applied, when the brake is released, the car will hold itself

7) i have put on about 2000 miles on the clutch stop, and even in heat like 100 degrees, and i haven't noticed anything wrong with it (getting loose or rattle)

so overall, i am very happy with the clutch stop. easy to install, works very well, and for the cost? it's really a no brainer

Can't believe people spend money on something that alters nothing. Just adjust your seat and it has the same effect, plus you have the full travel when needed (by extending your foot), like engaging first when cold. Just saying.

It does alter the clutch travel, and helps make the feel of the pedal better as it doesn't alter tension as you get near the end of the travel with the OEM stop. Some folks remove the spring to get rid of this difference in feel. The clutch is fully disengaged, so it doesn't make a difference there. The gear changes are smoother as the feel is more consistent and you can punch the clutch in and out with more confidence/consistency when shifting quickly.

Clutch stop

My E46 definitely needed one (which I had), but I think the E9x is much better. Still, I may try it if you think it's an improvement.

I put a clutch stop on, didn't feel a big difference at all. Sure it lessens the travel but it didn't improve driving feel or shifting for me. At times I also have to press down hard on the clutch to start it.

A clutch stop is one of the first mods I mad to my track car. IMHO it's more helpful than a short shifter in terms of quickening shifts. I'll have to look into this one for the E93. Thanks for the reviews.

Ordered same unit, came in 3 days, $10.99. I just removed the rubber surround from what is there now, and inserted the serrated part of the new stop.

Feels good so far, for 11 bucks, a worthwhile mod.

Just ordered as well. Will chime in once it gets here with added review. Sounds like it'll pair will with the SSK.

Agreed.

All it really does is take up some lost motion in the pedal travel.

For me that is of interest. More than $10, I probably would skip it.

Add me to the list... installed mine in 30 seconds, much smoother. Only using three washers though. Just have to delay clutch release a few ms's.

So just to make surer rom those who have it that doesn't have any side effects to hill assist, start, etc... I know it says so in the description but I would rather ask those who actually have it and use it....

I made mine and I am a big fan of them.
When I push in the clutch, I always push the clutch all the way in. (some don't)
I like the fact that the travel is lessened and the clutch catches so much quicker.
The problem with clutch stops for newer cars is that you can't go too agressive or the car will think the clutch isn't pushed in and you won't be able to start the car.

I drove one with a clutch-stop the other day, and was quite impressed with the way it drove. Seemed to make the shifts timed a bit better, given the RPM's have less time to drop before your foot comes back off the clutch.

Luckily the switch to start the car isn't all the way at the bottom. It actually triggers that fairly early into the actuation of the clutch. Start off assistance won't be bothered at all (just requires the car to be in gear, brake on, and clutch in).

I'm considering putting one in my car after driving the other one. Rominl: thanks for posting the review. For $14 bucks you can't go wrong and you're really not a loss if it's not for you.

I am very confused by this. How can a rubber stopper affect the operation of the clutch? As far as I can see this thing makes no changes to the clutch actuation mechanism. I assume that the engagement point of the clutch is at the same position as before you just can't push the clutch pedal as far past the engagement point. It can't affect the amount of pressure required to push in the clutch or the speed at which the pedal returns. How can that make any difference to the way the car shifts?

I have this problem. Sometimes I have to really slam on the clutch pedal to start the car. Seems like a sensor position problem for me. Maybe its adjustable. I gotta check it out.
