Gotta hate the dealership
Well I had my 30K service done last week and haven't driven the car since. So today I go out in the garage and I think I see a snake go under my car...well it was just a lizard but it was sitting next to a huge puddle of diff fluid. I'm like WTF so I get my tools to tighten it up and realize the drain plug is so loose I can hand tighten it. Glad I saw this before I got on the road and had my rear go BOOM. I'm going to call me service rep tomorrow and set up a top off since there was a lot on the floor.

OP, you have my sympathy.
Your experience reminded me that a couple of years ago my wife took her BMW in for routine service. The service center is a nice drive of some 70 miles. The evening after the service was performed I popped the hood to check fluid levels. Much to my surprise, as my experience with this particular BMW service center has been only positive over many years, the oil cap was not where it should be. A quick glance around and I spotted it laying upside down off to the side. The next day I phoned the service center to inform whomever about the situation and was told to bring it in because there was a good chance unwanted particles, trash, etc.., had joined the oil and another oil change was warranted. It all ended well, but carelessness or not being thorough is a cost or pain for all involved.

With "a lot" of fluid on the floor it might be worth having them flat-bed your car to the dealership for the top off. Unless you live very close (5 miles).

My worst was with a main Porsche dealer....I had some work done on a 911 and a few days later by some stroke of luck I notice that one rear wheel was held on by only two wheel nuts, finger tight.

Try to find a reputable local independent shop. I went to the dealership a few times when I bought my first BMW and learned the hard way. Here in Southern California we have a few good shop options, none better than AVUS Autosport in Glendale, CA. They are the best IMHO

I'm seriously at a loss for words at this one!!! Its one thing when damage to a car occurs due to negligence but when peoples lives are at risk thats just unacceptable.

THIS. The relationship is the most important thing. I know my SA, and my tech pretty well from the E46 days. I never have problems, nobody races my car nor does it ever come back with more than maybe 1 mile added to the odo. The sales team leaves something to be desired, but my service has always been top notch, and the same people working on it.

I wouldn't drive it with low diff fluid. Also I'd get them to give me a letter stating any future diff failure as a result of driving home with a hand tight drain bolt be covered by them.
