Then, a CHP pulled next to him and, over his PA system, told the driver to put both feet on the brake and pull the hand brake as well. That's when the vehicle began slowing. Toyota must be pulling their hair out. Do they have a problem? YES. Is it compounded by idiot drivers? YES YES

I forgot to mention. In the interview the driver stated that he did not attempt to turn off the vehicle because (1) there was no stretch of road straight enough for him to safely turn the vehicle off and (2) there was nobody covering his rear to protect him if he slowed suddenly.

Thirty years ago I had a GM product that accelerated when you activated the cruise control (I think a vacuum tube had come off or something). When it first happened I immediately pressed the brake pedal - issue resolved. We named it "Killer Cruise". After that we played chicken to see how fast you could go after hitting the Killer Cruise.
Maybe I was just born to drive a BMW.

I personally don't like Japanese vehicles. I'm not too crazy about Infiniti and Lexus. I can understand that some people think Infiniti & Lexus are cool cars, but to me they're okay. I hate when people are saying "Toyota builds best vehicles." More than half of my coworkers are Camry owners because they THINK their vehicles will last a very long time. On the freeway in Southern California, I see Camrys, Corollas and Prius everywhere. They're boooooring, generic vehicles. Toyota is a BIG company, they think they "rule" all over the roads. That is enough!! People, like my coworkers, want to buy long-lasting vehicles like Toyotas. That is their number one concern. They don't care about safety & performance-oriented...
I'd rather to drive European and American built vehicles. I'm glad that I'm in a small percentage of people who owns BMW vehicles. That makes me feel "different" from others. The other day, my coworkers and I went out for lunch in my car, they were surprised that I drive a Bimmer. Well, I didn't want to tell everyone that I drive a Bimmer. I kept it to myself. When I need to get a rental car in another town, I always look for American-built cars (I always avoid Japanese built cars). I really like to drive Chevy HHR, it's a nice, fun vehicle to drive. Sorry, I had to rant...I had to vent. I am SICK of hearing Toyota, Toyota, Toyota, etc. When my coworker telling me "oh, I'm thinking about getting a new Camry." In my head, I thought "oh no...". It's his 4th or 5th Toyota!!! Why can't he get something DIFFERENT?? I didn't want to give him my opinion, because I didn't want to start the argument with him. I just let him go whatever he wants.

Toyota's woes, imho highlights a glaring problem with driver's education in this country. This whole runaway/unintended acceleration issue has been highlighted before (remember Audi in the 80s). So today Toyota, tomorrow who knows. But what we need is the proper training to know what we need to do (in this case, putting the car out of gear). Part of the problem I think is that driver's ed and getting a license is done on auto transmission cars. I don't have a problem with autos, hey all my cars are slushboxes) - they are a great convenience feature- but the problem with that is that we do not gain an understanding of how the transmission works. I suspect most folks out there thinks its some magical lil' switch that makes the car go forwards and backwards. If kids need to learn to drive stick to earn a license (like the rest of the world) they will have a better understanding of the mechanicals of the car as well as car control. Of course that'll automatically weed out the kids who just don't have the aptitude for driving but hey that should make our highways a better place to be for all of us

Driver's education is a thing of the past. In FL, you pass a written test and get a learner's permit for a year. How many parents spend the time to actually educate their young drivers, let alone cover the mechanics of a vehicle.
Add to that the fact that cars are so complex these days that even doing minor maintenance is relegated to a quick oil-change shop new drivers (for the most part) know nothing about what makes a car go, stop or turn.

what a way to kick toyota while there down, my guess is he is just fustrated with toyota and wanted this to be publicized and what better way than to get help from a police car but most likely he just overpanicked in the whole situation

..... these comments are crazy. I own a 2008 Prius and I intend to test all these theories this weekend for two reasons. One to educate my wife (who drives the car) about how to regain control of the car and two to see what is the best option for doing so.
But to help answer some peoples misconceptions about the Prius here you go: Since the Prius has a button start, the car cannot be turned off if it's not in park. I've done that several times forgetting the car was still on while standing still and I just got an error saying the car was not in park. So i think turning the car off while moving is out of the question. The neutral thing I intend to look into. You should ba able to shift it into neutral but because all that is computer driven and not actually a manual leaver, I'm not sure thats possible if the computer has ffed up. I'll report back if people want. This has scarred me enough to look into trading it in. Going a non-Toyota route.

Yeah, let us know for sure! Also try flooring it while you slam on the brakes (in a safe area).

rhodesman : go for it. We're all interested to see your test. Kudos for the reasons of doing it.
Neutral is not normally locked out in most cars (it works on my cars). Shutting the car down shouldn't really be an option because you'd lose steering assist (and possibly brake assist).

The driver's test in FL is practically non-existent too They don't even take you out of the strip mall complex where some of the DMV offices are located. As mentioned, they really ought to step up the driving standards in this country and no place else to start than with new drivers. Did you see that Top Gear episode about learning how to drive in Finland?

this is the problem with some of the drivers who experienced this acceleration problem. they press the button perhaps many time and it doesnt turn off... its hard to train the brain to do something when your in a panic state. with all the electronics in the car perhaps it should be added to the drivers test how to handle an emergency sudden accelleration situation. ppp
