Quick question for fellow club members...

Certain times during parking situations or slow rolling scenarios when I depress the clutch, a significant "CLANK-and-a-rattle" noise occurs . Why is this and is it normal?

This is commonly reffered to as the "CLUNK". It's related to driveline lash in the MLock differential. The amount is greatly reduced from the E46 M3, but still there and normal. You learn to minimize it with how you use the clutch.

I'm going to have to pay very close attention over the next few days. From my observations so far, I believe it especially happens when the clutch is pressed to the floor rather quickly, in first, second, or reverse with less than 2500 rpms spinning.

Greg: It didn't seem like the noise was coming from as far back as the diff, more like the tranny area beneath the center of the vehicle...again, I will go double check this. Also, to confirm, it is not a single clunk, rather more of a CLUNK-and-a-rattle... say it fast and thats kinda what it sounds like with a louder clunk and a little rattle chaser. I hope this is "normal" like you mentioned about the e46.

OC, I think it is all normal. I wouldn't worry about it.

The noise I'm describing happens most readily when maneuvering slowly in parking lots and using the clutch to engage/disengage. It does travel through the driveshaft and may seem to eminate futher forward.

Oh man, well that sounds like it may be it, Did you find that the speed in which you depressed the clutch or the engine's rpms had a different effect on the "clunk"? Does it just need to be disengaged more "gently"?

To be safe, I'll have it checked at the 1200 mi. service next Monday.

Yes, if you're tooling around slowly, it helps if the driveline is not under power load when you disengage. You'll figure it out.
