Do You Wear A Racing Suit For Hpde????

wondered how many of you wear a suit for hpde....or do you think its over kill or completely unnecessary....

Hell no. Las Vegas PCA requires one if you run in the advanced group though (that's the only PCA/BMW CCA organization that I've ever heard of requiring one).

i know for true race cars the fuel lines are exposed and obviously in a sanctioned race the probability for a crash is much higher but lately i have observed more and more guys wearing them on hpde days...

When I first started tracking with my stock/lightly modified M3 I didn't wear one. When I got serious with the mods I got one, just seemed right if you know what I mean. I do not think its necessary unless your vehicle is highly modified or if you are really pushing the limit!

i always picture that guy who leaves his hotel room wearing his suit waving at the cute receptionist sitting at the desk trying to look cool on his way to the track .... but safety is always number 1 and who cares what people think i guess...i have been on the fence for awhile about getting one

As I am The Stig, I have to wear a suit for work, so I prefer not to wear one on my days off...

...all I can add, if you wear one, you better be damn fast...

I have been going back and forth on this for a while. i finally caved in and got one. Safety is number one in mine and my families book so that is my rational behind it. Rather safe than sorry. Also ride in other people full race prepped cars occasionally so nice to have it for that as well.

If sately is your #1 concern (it usually isn't until something bad happens) then absolultely invest in the best safety equipment you can afford (proper gear, roll cage, extinguisher, etc etc etc). A lot of what goes on out at a track is out of your control.

If I was driving a fully prepped track car I would wear one, but I'm just a weekend DE warrior trying to be as fast as those track cars.

I purposely don't wear one, but would if I was actually racing. I'm the guy who shows up, pulls the car seats out of the back, and runs in jeans and a t-shirt. Personally, I kind of relish taking out the race cars and "racers" in my wife's DD as if I just "happened" upon the track :

Not first on my list of safety mods, but I certainly see it as safer, especially at the speeds the advanced run groups achieve. After some other items, I think it is a wise investment. Corner workers or help can be a long way away if something really bad happens. A corvette went off and set the grass on fire last weekend in my group. It spread really fast. If you were stuck out there, I'd want some FRC.

I wear two b/c I'm twice as cool as the rest of the HPDE champions.

Yes, I do actually own two race suits and my wife has one. We never wore them in HPDEs, only races.

LV PCA group that requires the race suits has some 'race' cars in it, but they are better behaved and less risky to run with than some HPDE open passing groups I've seen.

Remember, if you are wearing a race suit, don't forget the lovely scratchy nomex socks. Worst part of the weekend was putting those on. Yech...

If you have one, wear it. That is my opinion. I have a stock E92 and will wear my suit if I take it on track. It's not going to hurt anything and who is to say someone is not going to wreck into you due to x, y, or z(a mechanical for example) and catch fire. It's better to have and not need then need and not have. I have a fully caged track car that I used to race frequently (not an M3), occasionally I would take one of my other vehicles out for instructing at DE's. When I would, I would wear jeans and a long sleeve shirt with the justification that the risk is significantly decreased because I'm not in a competitive environment. While it is lower, it's not significant enough for me to assume risk. Majority of the ppl I encounter on track; DE, TT, or W2W; are competitive people and will continue to push their limit. I had a friend say to me one night in the paddock when we were sitting around telling lies, "I'd feel pretty silly if my car caught on fire and my suit was sitting in the trailer in the paddock." I've always worn my since then.

If you do wear a suit at HPDE, please, please, please take it off (turn inside out to dry and lessen sun damage) right after your session ends. Don't walk around with it on. And for dogs sake don't wear it to the restaurant for lunch (seen it...).
