the 'vices' project

Wine by jsophoto, on Flickr

basically my goal is to capture the things people do and love that are generally not accepted or frowned upon by (american) society as a whole, although i may explore other cultures as it goes on. i want to make this a long term project. feedback appreciated.

i'm not going to put tag lines on every picture i do, these are just 5 shots from a 7+ hour session yesterday and i'm gonna use them for promo.

if I may....

none of these feel like "vices." when you think of vices, you think of darkness, hidden bad habits.

these are like got milk images with "bad things."

maybe title it something else? reshoot to fit your theme?

just thinking out loud.

i didn't get too deep with these, cause it's just the first set...but it's not about moderation. obviously social drinking is considered acceptable. smoking, maybe. abuse of prescription drugs? no. all of those things taken to an extreme? i'd consider them vices.

but again, this is only scratching the surface. i'd like to move toward doing things unscripted. and real.

Wine is not a vice. Wine is God's gift to mortal man.

Now "whining" on the other hand....

Vodka is the devil. So good, yet soooooo bad. I love a super dry vodka martini. Two of them and I'm wishing for death the next day. Don't know what it is about vodka, but it's a killer for me.

i don't like the smoking one, if the picture were of her right side more, less of her face would be blocked by her hand and it would open her up better.

it just feels like it's you walked out the back door and shot someone having a smoke without setting up much. If you cropped it closer and did it in black and white maybe it might say more, but just the way it is now, it doesn't speak to me like the others do.

I do like all the others, I like Rodi's suggestion too. There are many levels to vices though, so I like seeing your lighter interpretation, and can't wait to see other interpretations over time.

IMO try helvetica

also the photos are way too clean to convey the mental image of a 'vice'

you need to get dirtier and grittier IMO
