7mpg -> 24mpg

talk about extremes!
7mpg (actually a low of 6) while at an hpde. nothing like filling twice in a day.. lol

then - driving 65mph today and being gentle on the throttle brought me 24. i dont believe it, though. im sure when i fill again itll be the usual 17. lol.

That's pretty much average for any car. If you floor it in a Prius, you get some horrible mpg. Top Gear did a gag skit where they had a Prius burn around a track as hard as it could, and an M3 just paced it. The M3 ended up getting much better mileage.

It can also be advantageous to accelerate quickly to save gas, depending on the distance between stops. For example, if you have to travel 1km between stop lights, it may be better to floor it, get 6mpg for 75 meters, and then once you're up to speed you get 20+ for the remaining 925 meters, vs getting 10-12mpg over 500 meters slowly accelerating.

I just got back from a 1600 miles trip. On the way there (started with 1800 miles) got 21.7 mpg doing 80 mph for 805 miles, way back same speed and distance but got 22.9 mpg. I average about 17 during normal driving and continues to get better as I get more miles on the car. (now 3800)

brightside I should not see much of a usage increase from my 550I to my M3 if you can get 16-17mpg on the M3 normally. I average 18.5 mpg on the 550.

I think you guys are amazing drivers or I don't know how to drive. I cannot get 17 > mpg in my 335i RWD manual 2011! I'm not kidding. I love the turbo sound and revving the engine so I don't usually shift below 3500 and most of the time end up shifting in the sweet spot 4000-4500 rpm, I pay so much for gas.

But at least I don't have to rev till 7000 because I have that low end torque.

I AM KIDDING, please, if there is one more thread about the low end torque, I will go and buy an M3 tomorrow and tear my 335i into pieces. Joking aside, I do get very low mpg in my 335, so yes, when you floor it, it doesn't matter if it's an M3 or a focus.

I got better gas mileage with my M3 on the track than I did with my my 335i. 7mpg v 5mpg. I didn't expect that result.
