hood air duct

the two air ducts on top of the hood,
only one of them has an intake, the drivers side one.
I noticed there is plenty of space for water to get in there,
either from rain or from washing the car.
Do you guys think this maybe dangerous? but there must be some kind of
a drain on this duct...no?

Run a hose to it, see where the water comes out. Seriously do it.

Yeah, it's dangerous. BMW never thought about rain, or car washes. I would cover it with duct tape or drill a hole for drainage.

Wow. Way to be helpful. I did a search, because I didn't know the answer either. It wasn't easy to find. I spent almost 40 minutes looking for the answer. It wasn't even a stupid question.

There are drains Enthusiasm.

See how easy that was?

No only one opening is required ... we all have the same. Don't worry about the drain or danger etc, ///M Division engineers know what they are doing ... no need for you to worry. Open your hood and have a good look you will see where the water drains out. Make a test A)poor some water into the air duct then B) open the hood and have a look

I figured BMW would ultimately use the duct in a later version of the car when the HP its boosted to 450 or so. Too bad it never happened. Also surprised no one on the aftermarket used it to develop a better ram sure intake for the car.

ok awesome.
thanks guys!
the answer I got from all this : there must be an air duct.
Rgarding the engineers that made my car, I am sure they thought of that
but the idea of putting the washing hose right above the duct made me a little nervous knowing that the air filter follows...

If you take a look at the diagram posted you can see there is absolutely no room for improvement in this intake system. I would venture to say its probably the best stock intake setup on any production car aside from some of the super cars.

It has two major ram air intake paths in front. One at the grilles and one on the lower left area. Then the vent on the hood allows for airflow and eliminates stagnant warm air.

There is nothing they could have done to the hood vent to create anything better than what is there. It is a surprisngly well thought out intake system and almost unheard of compared to stock. Even compared to the e60 m5 V10 engine's intake which was severely lacking in ability to get enough air sucked in.

haha... I think the aftermarket forgot it was there and keeps trying to ram air into the intake forgetting there's a big hole on top for it to escape

As you can see this forum rocks
the other one wouldn't answer me with the diagram etc..
I mean this observation that many people make when one posts in 2 forums is funny because
if there are two forum, then someone should make 2 posts right?
otherwise why do we have 2 instead of one..

If water enters into the airbox through the hood, it will just run right out and come out down at the lower air intake. Just open up the airbox and you'll see that it tough for water to get sucked into the air intake through the air filter. There is nothing to worry about.

Now of course if you plug the bottom hole, it'll be like closing the drain plug on your bathtub...it'll eventually fill the airbox, suck water into the intake, and destroy your engine. Water unfortunately doesn't compress as well as air.
