Hopefully the dynamics and intangibles are still there.

Looking forward to reading/seeing the first drives and tests.

On my regular commute, I see a 2010 GT3RS peering through a Lambo dealership's doors. I sat in it a few weeks ago and didn't want to get out (it was just unlocked and no salesmen were around). With the roll-cage in the back, it looks exactly like a race car.

You definitely need to drive them both back-to-back. The numbers on paper don't even start to tell the story.

The GT3 is a phenomenal car. They are beautifully balanced and undoubtedly superior to the M3 on a track but is relatively savage, uncompromising and not as easy to "live with" as an M3.

It really depends what you're looking for in a car.

The new GT3 is stupid fast. I doubt even an ESS 625 M3 has much on it in a straight line.

I always wonder how a short test drive on busy crappy roads with a sales person in the passenger seat can tell you anything about the car.. I buy cars without a test drive. Enough research like forums, car mags, Chris Harris reviews, etc etc will tell a prospective buyer a lot more, IMO.

I never drove a GT3, but I am sure this would be the best car for me... Just like M3, the car was everything I expected and then some

If you track you will never look back. If you try to DD or run errands, look out. RS does not enjoy short trips and slow speeds.

997 GT3 would be my choice. 997.2 over 997, 997.2 RS better yet, 997.2 GT3 4.0 the best.

This is titled a "modification and tuning" guide, but is a great buyer's guide.

997.1: http://sharkwerks.com/porsche/porsch...07-2008-a.html

997.2: http://sharkwerks.com/porsche/porsch...10-2011-a.html

GT3 is the only direction I can see myself going post-M3. Don't care for the diff, RMS and coolant pipe issues though. It has a reputation as being particularly stout once sorted, but some of these fundamental issues are pretty ridiculous given the purpose of the car.

Might just be worth it though. My ride in a 4.0 on track was, memorable.

The Turbo S is nothing special. The Turbo 911's are fat doctors cars at this point. They are bloated.

The GT3 is something special if you truly drive your car. If you want to go to cars and coffee and do burnouts and race stop light to stop light then keep the M3.

The e92 is faster than 996 GT3 in straight line and slower than 997 GT3.
In circuit any GT3 is faster than M3. In a track of 1 km long I go sometimes, the 2007 997.1 GT3 is 3 seconds faster than my 2010 M3 E92 DCT (53.9 vs 56.9 sec). A 2007 997 turbo with some modes (remap, suspension) takes 52 sec, the same as a 2009 GTR with remap and exhaust. After the M3 I think the natural step is the GT3, more fun (RWD) than 997 turbo or GTR, high RPMs like the E92 (9000 RPM) and more lighter.

Next year I am moving from the M3 to a 997 GT3. Here in Chile a 2010 E92 M3 cost $60.000 usd and a 2007 GT3 is about $90.000 usd, the same as a 2007-2008 997 turbo or 2009-2010 GTR (2014 GTR premium cost $140.000 here)

Gt3 is very hard to dd even in good weather. Depressing the clutch is a workout and your legs may look different from each other in a few months. I bought a 2010 gt3 after test driving one and sold it after 2 months. It's an amazingly fun car to drive but it's also difficult to live with on a daily basis. If your set on getting one I would highly suggest buying one with the front axle lift option. That is by far the most important option to get in that car.

I won't. I could have gotten the gt3 when I built my e46, but its not a smart financial choice. Now I have that extra 50K to use on tires pads or whatever. My next stop I think would be a z06 before the gt3 again money driving that choice. Can't see spending that much for the name when I'm already as fast as 996 gt3 and closing in on 997.1.

I want one ....Or wish I could DD one in montreal
But hey , like you said, not a wise choice financialy OR physically.
I'm gonna sell the E92 soon to get something that can handle our winters up here. Then I'm really gonna be discouraged !!

Ran with a track focused Z06 last week. 2850 lbs., 490 wheel hp, carbon rear wing, recaros, ap racing brakes, etc. Absurdly fast. I wish I wanted one of those 1/2 as much as I want a GT3.

997 GT3s holding their value pretty well in the last couple of years.

BMW has lost its soul in the vision of global warming and Al Gore fantasies...

I'm saving my lunch money for a GT3 myself. You'll not miss the power one bit.

I agree. I think the i8 is pretty cool but the direction BMW has gone (both with design and engines) is bad. Porsche, on the other hand, has been amazing me lately. As has GM.
