Some people say the 135i is nicer(more fun) car than the M3 are they smoking dope?
I post a lot on S2Ki forum, not that it matters, but I have been seeing A LOT of posts saying how the 135i was nicer (or more fun to drive) than the M3
I have not driven the 135i at all but I know it's numbers, stats, etc. and have seen it in person (not a looker) but I can see why people would like such a car with 300/300 engine (maybe under-rated) and with (IDK) say 300 lbs less weight than a M3 no doubt its a fun enough little bugger. But can people honestly say the 135i is better/more fun than an M3? I am thinking this is "I-can't-afford-it-itis" or something like that. Meaning they say well the M3 costs $60K to $70K and the 135i (ish) around $40K so there is a WIDE margin for liking the 135i. That's one thing to say the 135i is a better value or it's easier to drive being slightly smaller and less weight. One guy actually said (I don't know how they can type these things) but said: "the M3 was 'not fun' unless you are driving 100 mph" huh? I said the M3 needs 3rd gear to get 100 mph and likely it's fun enough grabbing 8300 rpm in 1st, 2nd and on to 3rd gear. Also, many (most) public roads (b-roads) are the type you can drive in 2nd/3rd gear in the 60-mph range and have fun with. what's going on? |

I respect the 135i 4.7s to 60 mph (etc.)
However the M3 does stomp all over it as speeds grows. I know a chip maybe the 135i is as quick (ie. 335i v M3) BUT all the arguments I have for why the M3 is better (worth more) than the 335i would go double for the 135i Looks M3 > 335i > 135i the M3 is larger (more room) but it's not like it's a large car, it's a normal size car and has good interior room. The M3 is far above a 135i in status/looks that's it's not even funny. It would be like a Scion vs a Lexus. (maybe that's a exaggeration) but the point is the M3 has more status/quality all the way around and track tunned suspension as well as EDC, DCT etc. many features not to be had on the 1-series yet. one point where the 135i may be sneaking up is on fun-to-drive but I find it hard to believe the 135i is way the funner car which is what these guys are saying. |

135i is to M3 as Cayman is to GT3..... do you think the GT3 pilots care when Cayman guys talk about balance and affordability?

Although I don't agree at all with these people.
They aren't talking about HP, they could care less about it. They are talking about how involving the car is. |

Lots of hostility here for the 1, and I really don't understand why. Most of the reasons for M3 that I have seen in this post originate from either status or aesthetics, which brings us back to OP's subject: "Some people say the 135i is nicer(more fun) car than the M3." Most common reason for 1 is the fun aspect, and the passion to drive. Second to that is the value - a lot of bargain hunters there.
I don't know where OP heard his stories, but as an 1addict member, I have yet seen a thread saying 1 is "more" than M3. Before I step off the soap box, I'd like to ask is the M3 or 3 series a poor man's M5 and 5 series. Many of the logical reasons that 3 series buyers used to choose over the 5 are shared with 1 owner's decision. I am not here to defend the 1 series so flame away. |

^ I see what you are saying it's 2 different things I am talking about.
On the one hand the M3 is larger (more room = more useful for some). the M3 has nicer features, leather, stereo (option), DCT, CF-leather trim, CF roof, nicer wheels, tires, LSD, much nicer to look at and nicer street cred or cachet or curb appeal. Those things add up to why the M3 is more costly by far just like the M6 would be over a M3. - the question comes from is the 135i more 'fun' which can be a question hard to say. I drove a McLaren SLR and while it was fast and exotic looking it was not 'fun' to toss around. It was like driving a boat with big tires and a big engine. I'm sure with time I could get an idea of what to expect and how to drive such a car but on the surface it was a non-fun car (for me). Likely as size and price goes down the cars are 'easier' to drive so people can push them and have fun. |

don't worry - we won't flam you. oersonlly I think the 1 is not very good looking. its like a cute fate little brother to the 3 series. maybe I'd buy my daughter one to drive when she is 16. but I need to see it on the road - the one at LA car show was UUUUUUgggggllllly!!!!

The front feels almost identical. The rear actually has more head/shoulder room than a 3-series coupe. The 1-series being small, is actually a myth. I wish it was as small as some people think. |

It was a very fun car to drive, eventhough I was driving an auto. I can see why people would choose it over a 335i. The S5 is a lot better looking than a M3. But I would never take one over a M3. |

No wonder. Now I understand this because it came from s2k owners. They like small cars, as do I. I don't agree with him at all. He talks about M3 not suitable for DD under the harshest settings. Gee wiz, that's why the mode is reserved for track. That's equivalent of complaining about an ALMS car being too harsh for runs to Costco. Point is M3 can be a refined DD under softest setting.

I test drove one of this 135 in Manual, as much as I try there was just a disconnect between me and the car... I'd take a regular e90 335 over it, at least I can slouch a bit, Can't do it with my size on a 135

Really, I actually have a E90 335i. The 135i I tested felt like a completely different car. Easily the 135i was a more tossable car. It didn't feel faster, but it is by a small margin. The big thing I liked, was the Brembo brakes. It stopped F'n quick. I am 6'2 and fit just fine in it, it didn't feel cramped at all. Although no one could sit behind me, but no one can sit behind me in my 3er.
