Microsoft Excel - Can you have a formula applied to cell where you enter data?
Basically, if I want to enter the year 2004 in cell A1 (and the rest of the A column), can I have excel perform a computation with that data entry, 2004, and return a result in that cell? I basically just want to avoid having an extra column.

Nope. Don't think so. You can always hide the column.

not sure if that helps but you can do the following for example: having 2004 in many cells in the A column... you can copy the value of another cell (for example the number 23 from C5) and then mark all cells in column A, paste special, multiply (or some other operation). This would multiply all cells in column A with 23 and returns the result within the cells in column A.

Its a data sheet for a group of fraternity members, I dont want to have a column that has "Graduating Year" and another one for "Academic Level". Hiding just makes it a pain in the ass for exporting to html and have the column elsewhere (like further to the right as column ZZ) just makes it a pain in the ass for data entry.

Put your data in column A on Sheet1, use Sheet2's column A to perform the calculations (which reference Sheet1's Column A values) and export Sheet2 to HTML.

If I have cell A1 with entered data and cell A2 performing a calculation such as "=year(A1-4)", can I have it show absolutely nothing unless there is something entered in A1? I'd basically want to protect certain cells (that would be calculated) from modification. But it I protect them I'd want someone to be able to copy the cells so that newer members can be added.

The "" will make it show nothing (emptry string) if the field you read from is blank.
