Autoweek M3 Sedan article scan

Hopefully, not a repost--10/15/07 issue.

Note:
"BMW puts the new car's curb weight at 3531 pounds, about 25 pounds more than the M3 Coupe."

"...with the M3 sedan offering a slightly more compliant ride than the coupe due to the slightly inferior ridgidity of its four-door body."

"The M3 sedan makes its world debut at the upcoming Tokyo show, followed by a U.S. premier in Los Angeles in November. The car goes on sale simultaneously with the coupe next spring, priced in the low $60,000 range."

Thanks... Interesting about the weight. I thought the coupe was 3650lbs curb weight.

Funny thing is the E46 sedan had a more rigid chassis than the E46 coupe. I would think the same for the E9X.

I doubt they have inside info--probably a guesstimate.

Manufacturer specs. You can find the info over at E46Fanatics. Plenty of threads regarding chassis rigidity.

Here are a couple of links for you to read:

http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthr...assis+rigidity

http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthr...assis+rigidity

There is also a link to chassis specs on Bimmerfest. Weight was the same for the E46 coupe/sedan, and the coupe is based off of the sedan.

The number here show the sedan 4% stiffer than the coupe, so not a bid deal I guess.

I notice how rigid my 330i as well. I'm not sure how the numbers play out for the E9X chassis though. Whipping the 330i into corners is fun stuff. Apparently, the E90/E92 335i chassis is 25% stiffer than the E90 330i chassis, so I am eager to see which ///M variant handles better.

Did you mean, "...than the E46 330i chassis?"

Old news for e46 platform.

For the e90/e92 chassis, the e92 is 25% stiffer in torsional rigidity than the e90. Two references:

Though, of course, the differences between the E92 335i and E92 M3 chassis mean we cannot yet compare the two versions of the new M3.

Hmm, they claim no E93 M3 until Geneva 2008. That's kind of a bummer. I was really hoping to see it in Detroit. It also means it likely won't go on sale until later that year.

Good info

We will see it at the LA autoshow - EXCELLENT
Weight very close to coupe - EXCELLENT
Price in the low $60's - Not so much...

I know the prices are still rumors/estimates but my bet is still at $60k+ and more and more mags are "betting" that way as well. Just look at the competitors, even the ones in the BMW training publication - Carrera and RS4. This bests both in performance and will probably best both in pricing yet still be >$60k. JEllis - are you reading!

Swamp, I am going to have to get a gag order on you if you keep spewing that misinformation.

I wouldn't call that information of any kind--just informed speculation. Personally, I also speculate that it will come in under $60k base.

Should we believe this? It was thought all along, just until recently, that the convertible and coupe would be together upon US release. Can we really hope for the sedan to arrive initially instead? I'd love it, but want to be realistic.

You think...?

I would think that is perfectly possible, especially given the interest in the US for the sedan. It seems ready for production. I would think the convertible production would start when sales of them would be best, not before next spring - summer.
