Windshield replacement?

As the title said, has anyone replace their windshield before?
Is it a hard thing to do?
Thanks!

Definitely not a DIY unless you have the correct tools and know what you're doing.

Typically contracted out by the dealer to a local shop. When I had mine replaced, I asked who the dealer used and I called them up and I went with Pinkerton OEM (the OE with the BMW label is way more expensive and only available at the dealer and is supposedly the exact same glass). The local shop said that BMW has gravitated to using thinner glass over time to save on cost/weight. Given that these windshields are much more susceptible to pebble cracks, might make more sense to go with the cheaper OEM route. I believe mine was under $500 w/labor and the guy came out to my house to install it (which is exactly what they do at the dealership).

Mine's cracked. I got a quote for replacement from Safelite for $306. (aftermarket).

Then I went to the dealer where I purchased the car (used car dealer not BMW) and got a new quote for $240. tax free installed from their connection. Bingo!

Just beware that all glass is not equal. Cheap glass will be very noticeable from the driver's seat.

I guess I hadn't thought about that but it's funny you mention that because recently while my car was in for scheduled maintanence the loaner car from BMW (a 328i) had a really ripply windshield. I thought to myself "thank god my car's glass isn't all warped like that!

During a trip I got a bottle cap size smack from a stone. Replaced the glass in Berlin at a "CarGlass". 800 Freakin' Euros. That's like a $1000.

They got it from BMW, but damn, that's expensive, even if insurance is paying.

Exactly. That's why as long as the wallet can take it, I will always do OEM.

Had my windshield replaced in my E46 M3 - stupid dump truck carrying gravel on the interstate.

Here in KY, you do not have to pay deductible. State Farm agreed to have dealer replace shield with OEM - looked great but was mucho $$$.

Ask the same company for a quote on the OEM BMW glass (Pilkington). I would be surprised it if isn't only a couple hundred more.

Just had Safelite replace mine with a Pilkington brand windsheild for $377. Excellent job and they also changed the mouldings. You do not want to replace it yourself. It's not a DIY job.

as I said in one of the other threads, if your OEM glass cracks so easily, why do people perceive it to be superior?

I paid under $200 to have a local place do an aftermarket replacement - it looks fine and the rain sensor works, and it seems less prone to rock chips so far.

I may try the saint-gobain (the other OEM) stuff if this windshield ever breaks - it's reportedly pretty durable and Safelite has it, but I probably would never go for the OEM pilkington windshield

I had mine replaced as well. Got a crack all the way to the edge during the road trip. I went OEM route. I cant find the thread right now, but some folks had issues with aftermarket glass not fitting properly.

Def not a DIY job.

Just got mine changed Friday. Dealer quoted about $875!

I went with a local shop that uses Pilkington glass, which is OE glass minus the BMW logo.

Turns out that the dealer uses the company I used. LOL. Fricken $600 mark-up at the dealer....go figure.

It was a bit under $300 total. Glass looks great....

I guess I'll look for a shop who can get pilkington glass..Thanks Guys!

Windshield glass is laminated safety glass, meaning it is two pieces of glass with a clear polyvinylbutryl interlayer between the two pieces of glass which holds the windshied together in case of a crack or impact. Depending on the quality of the glass manufacturer fabrication procedures and cleanliness, optical quality (visual distortion, stones, flaws etc) can vary greatly. This is one of those cases where the less you pay, the more likely you will have poor optical quality. Low price glass also is more likely to have edge flaws, which can make the windshield prone to failure from the edge due to vibration. Word to the wise. Dont always go with the lowest price because you may end up being disappointed.

got a crack in my previous M3's windshield at 500miles.

my insurance referred me to safelite and they tried twice to install a non-oem windshield...the fitment sucked each time (to safelite's credit, they worked with me and i thought their CS was great).

i complained to my insurance and they finally relented and allowed me to replace at a body shop with an oem windshield...fit was perfect and they picked up all the costs (USAA rocks, btw).

I have never had any trouble with aftermarket glass and I have had half a dozen windshields. Got a crack in my 08M3 windshield right now. As far as I can tell, it is just 3 series glass and 3 series are common cars.
