"While Mercedes-Benz has been steadily re-integrating its four-seat coupes and cabrios into their corresponding sedan ranges, BMW is reportedly preparing to go the other way. Word from Car Magazine has it that the Bavarian automaker is preparing to launch the next-generation versions of its 1 Series and 3 Series coupes and convertibles as the 2 Series and 4 Series, respectively"

I dont believe the 3 coupe will change its badge to 4-series because of the 3-series brands success globally. Also, the M3 name is legendary and I can not see the benchmark M3 Coupe changing to an M4.

About 90% of 3 series sales globally are the sedan. So the change will serve to better distinguish the coupe/convertible. In theory their sales could actually grow due to better exposure.

M Division will keep the M3 name for the coupe. The M4 will be the M version of the 4 Gran Coupe.

No one knows for sure what will happen yet.

I am saying that if the name change from 3 series coupe/convertible to 4 series coupe/convertible does go through, then the cooresponding M models (well, the coupe at least) will retain the M3 name. Presumably the rumored F31 M3 touring would also wear this M3 name as well, and so would a F30 M3 sedan if they decide to build one (just as there are multiple M3 body styles today).
