Raw oysters, anyone?

Anyone else a major fan of raw oysters on the half shell? I first tried them when I was in California and I couldn't get enough... such a nice, crisp and lightly mild taste with the perfect touch of lemon and a dash of mignonette sauce.

Since then I've made trips to 99 Ranch Market to buy my own oysters and then had shucking parties with some colleagues.

My favorite are blue point and kumamoto.

Anyone else?

i fucking love oysters. i had some pretty good blue point oysters on tuesday. i love going to nice steak or seafood houses to get the good oysters. good, cold water atlantic oysters are by far my favorite. we have a lot of gulf oysters around here, but they aren't nearly as good as some of the east coast oysters.

I'm becoming very partial to the east coast oysters now. I've had the locally farmed ones from Nor Cal, but I've tried a few platters over here in D.C. and absolutely love them... they all have their own unique tastes and they add up the credit card bill quickly too.

You been to any good oyster joints in D.C?

I think the last time I had oysters on the half shell, I blew chunks. Granted I did take down like 4 dozen. They were delicious when I was eating them though. Haha

True though, Atlantic oysters are better than the Gulf.

OMG can't believe I missed that when I went to NYC.

I like raw oysters especially the sweet and buttery tasting ones. Can't remember the names though. But I don't eat a lot, maybe 6 each time.

GC oyster bar is great, but I hate the location - very touristy.

Blue water grill in union sq. is great, and I've heard very good things about aqua grill in soho

Raw oysters are awesome! Definitely one of my favorites every once in a while. If anyone lives in or around San Francisco, there's a place on Embarcadero called Waterbar that has $1 oysters every day from 11ish to 6 pm. Yes I said EVERY DAY! And I believe they have some $5 cocktails. $20 there goes a long way!

Yeah, I usually test the freshness by pushing the oyster knife on the mantle/outer tissue area on the edge of the shell -- the fresh/lives ones always move just a little.

Delish.

anyone else like their oysters with mignonette sauce? if you haven't tried, it's easy to make. diced shallots, pepper, and vinegar. my favorite not tabasco sauce. also try crystal hot sauce on them. don't know if that's something you find out of the south or not.

I love using a dab of Sarachi sauce, with some diced green onions, and a dash of lemon... but that ponzu sauce is rather good too. My mouth watered when I typed that.
