Buying a pre-owned E92 - CPO or not?

I come over from the Mercedes world where many people won't buy a used AMG unless it is still under warranty and/or CPO due to high costs to fix issues.

Is that the same when buying a used M3? Would you stay away if not warrantied?

Generally, that's the thinking with BMW's as well, especially M cars. Costs can be high if you are not a DIY person and even if you are, price of parts are higher than "normal" BMWs . If you can, it might be a good idea to pick a car still under warranty or CPO.

With that said, the e9x M3's have proved itself to be very reliable. My 08 is coming off warranty next month and I have no plans to either get rid of my car or buy an extended warranty.

I would say it's just about the same. God forbid something goes wrong, you don't want to spend that much pocket money when you can be covered by warranty !!

The 4.0 V8 engine of the M3 costs north of $33,000. That alone would make me always have a warranty of some sort but from what I know, the engines are bullet-proof.

CPO or 50k warranty, you can purchase a good 100,000 mile extended warranty that will cover the engine if it goes.

My first was a used one e46 and fully certified by BMW, my second one a 2011 was practiclaly new (very slightley used) again fully certified.

I would check the maintenance records to make sure no high repair costs and inspections have taken place at a BMW dealership. See if the dealership can provide extended warranty (both on major parts and maintenance). If they refuse then don't get the car, find another.

If you purchase used private insist on a BMW complete inspection and while the inspection is being done ask about extended warranty.

Stay clear of cars that have seen the track. High repairs on the inspection reports will point to extended track time or abuse.

In general the M3 is an excellent car, designed for high speed on the Autobahn, good luck I am sure you find the right one.

Good luck finding a CPO M3...they are rare as the dealer often elects not to CPO the car. Of course you can usually pay to have them do it but I've been told it's like 5k or more. I recommend buying the newest model you can afford that is still under warranty and/or buy an extended warranty. There are tons of threads on here about extended warranties. Some say it's a waste but I like the piece of mind it provides. Also, you can extend the BMW maintenance also (oil changes and brake jobs) however that's usually only worth it if you know your car is about to be out of the original 4 year warranty and you have not yet replaced the brakes. In that case buy the extended maintenance as it usually pays for itself.

For my e92 2011 aw, and With 14k on the odometer and zcp, dct, tech pkg, conv pkg, the dealer in MD quoted me the cost to CPO and to extend service to 2 yr / 100k. Cpo and extended service would apply after factory warranty and service plan expire at 4y or 50k miles.

Verbal quotation:
CPO = $7000
Extended service plan = $3500.
Maybe this could be negotiated. I did not try.

Definitely recommend CPO - bought my '09 e93 last year with 19k miles, and based on my research CPO cost me around $2,000 (after negotiation )

Will tuning your car void the CPO warranty? Does the standard CPO warranty come with extended service (brake jobs, oil change, etc.) ?

Voiding the warranty is up to the dealer and what they find that caused any problems. Example-A window motor should be covered even if you are tuned.

CPO does not cover maintenance/15k service intervals after the 4/50 ends.

I just extended mine through bmw platinum. Covers everything except wear and tear. It also covers nav. I think it's worth it.

It was a low pressure fuel pump sensor issue then two weeks later it was a fuel pump control unit issue. Seemed both were related. NO issues with warranty. Just brought it in and they fixed it. Paid nothing.
