find a wallet, what would you do?

So i was on the train yesterday, and fate had it that i was walking down the aisle and i spot a pretty thick wallet half under the seat but half exposed.

a huge grin came onto my face as i imagined the possibilities of what could be inside.

well i opened it and there was a good amount in it. $51 in cash, multiple credit cards, debit card, statements, train pass (worth over $100)etc.

so i took the $51 and the train pass, but i started feeling guilty so i left the train pass in there. then i gave the rest of the wallet to the conductor. when i got home i used the $51 towards a fat sac of reefer.

now, my question is, what would you have done? taken the credit cards? taken nothing? what i did?

i don't know i feel like i did him a favor by not stealing EVERYTHING... so the cash was just my reward for being "nice". that's the way i look at it.

for me I would probably tell the lost and found place that I have a wallet and give them my phone number. I wouldnt give it to the lost and found place cus they'd probably take the money anyway.

I would try contacting the owner. Perhaps look him/her up in the white pages since u have the wallet (license should b in there). Perhaps you can call the credit card company and tell them that u found the credit card and have them call the owner. Then the 2 of u can meet up or something.

I wouldnt take the money though. Money found on the street is a different story.

it was the right guy, right adress listed for the number..... but the number just did not work.

hey, it's not my fault the guy was a dumbass. it coulda been much worse for him, i could have gone and charged a crapload on his CC and then tossed it, taken his train pass and used it myself.

honestly, if i was stupid enough to leave my full wallet on the train like that i wouldn't expect to get it back at all. in fact, i'd be happy if i found everything but the $ left in there...

How about you call the 800 number on one of his CC's and have the operator contact him for you. Both he and the CC company will appreciate the gesture. If that is successful, you should return the wallet and replace the money inside. It seems that you have attempted to do the right thing, so one more try would not be too bothersome.

That is an excellent solution. Although it may not pain you now about keeping petty change, some years later, it will be one of the many regrets you keep. Small things matter.

I'm sure he purposely dropped his wallet on the train.

IMO, that's the worst part of losing your wallet, not knowing who has your info and their intentions.

Well, at the very least cut up the CC's and his ID. And since you're in college take the money and this weekend.

no comment on the aforementioned post........

I would give everything back, without taking anything out. Some may think i am stupid for being honest. Reward shouldn't be determined by you, but by someone who he/she thinks it was worth awarding it.

I better shut up before i pissed everybody off on this forum for being a moral police. But posting something like this is just asking for it........

Hope you will make a better judgement next time.....

hopefully the guy has his crap back, i know it was probably the wrong thing to do..... but i don't know if you guys know what its like being a broke college kid who comes across an opportunity olike that one

It seems as if you feel badly about taking the money, if so then you know it wasn't the right thing to do.

you're right. it obviously wasn't the "right" thing to do. and morally i believe that.

BUT i do believe that nice guys never win when it comes to crap like this.

how am i rewarded by doing the right thing? its more than likely the guy would have just said "wow, thank you so much, i really appreciate that". and i would have never heard from him again.

is the feeling of doing the right thing really better than the 50 bucks? i'm not so sure. i've done 150 hrs community service for an old people home before, so i know what the feeling of doing the right thing is like. frankly id rather have the 50 bucks. i mean if it was an old lady wallet, i would have definetely given the $ back. but this was a 39 year old guy who lived in framingham which is a nice area in MA.

you gotta get ahead in this world some way.
