Long cranking

Got a 08 M and this morning it didn't seem like it wanted too start. Super long crank so guess I'd bring it too the dealer Tuesday. Just wondering anyone have a idea why?

Really? I only got 42xxx km on it. Seems like it only happens when parked outside for a period of time. But even then it's not longer then a day.

Had a similar problem with my ’09 – thought it was the battery (wasn’t) and after getting worse over 3-4 weeks finally it wouldn’t start no matter what – even with an attempted jump start.

End result – ignition module stuffed and was replaced under extended warranty – took 2 weeks out of Germany.

All good now and battery still going strong.

Might be a different problem though

Battery. Is it cold/cooler where you live? Try hooking it up to a trickle charger for a while and see if you notice a difference.

Happened to me yesterday morning. It was really really cold (45 degrees) and had been raining. Crank took maybe 2.5 seconds before it started. Brand new battery, too. I wouldn't worry too much about it unless it is the original battery on your 08.

Batteries generally last 5-7 years, so if you have an early '08, it could be time for a new one.

My 2008 takes a couple extra cranks in the morning. I'd say it's pretty normal.

Check voltage with a voltmeter. Should be at least 12.2 with everything off.

Mine just started doing this a couple of weeks ago. Especially this morning, I'd say it takes almost a full 2 seconds longer to crank. When it's warmer in the afternoon, no such problems. Good to know, was starting to get worried.

Good to know, thanks Mike. I don't have a voltmeter, although I can get my friend to bring one to work tomorrow. Would reading the voltage via OBD2 while the car is running help me diagnose anything?

So got my car back today. Long cranking was due too damage battery. Had a water leak which corroded the battery and ibs cables. Items were replace under warranty. Hope this fixes the problem. Trunk trim and seal were also replaced.
