Difference between 2008 I-Drive and 2009 I-Drive

I'm still debating whether or not to get a 2008 M3 or a 2009 M3. Right now, I'm leaning toward the 2008 because the 0.9% financing of a 2008 vs. 5.9% on a 2009. We are talking about $10,000 difference in interest on a 60 month note.

So the question is, what are the differences between the 2008 I-Drive and the 2009 I-Drive? Are all the menus pretty much the same? Is the 2009 menus significantly faster? Does the 2009 navi map refreshes significantly faster? Any other differences? One Sales Associate told me that the 2009 screen is slightly larger..is this true?

Per above, the 2009 iDrive is superior in all aspects. If you are just leasing, probably not worth the cost. If buying and you plan to keep it for a while, I'd go for the 2009 [I did, but I didn't finance my purchase!]

Don't forget the additional resale value of a 2009 vs a 2008 - not because of iDrive, but just because it's one model year newer. Used car prices are affected by the year, regardless of how long the car has actually been in service.

Thanks for the videos. But considering that I have never used I-Drive, perhaps I won't be tainted with the supeior 2009 I-Drive. I do plan on keeping the M3 for awhile (perhaps 5 yrs), but I just would hate spending an extra $10,000 in interest for a better I-Drive.

Does the 2008 I-Drive have the hard drive to copy music to it?

Does a 2008 have the USB port?

It all depends on what you like about the M3. To me I could care less about navigation, etc... that are included in i-drive. I love the car because of the way it performs/handles/sounds and connects with the driver. All of that is the same between an 08 and 09. So for me choosing an 08 over an 09 was a piece of cake.

No, it's not worth $10,000. Like attbimmer said, we get an M3 for the driving experience. But I'm also a techno geek, and just love all the latest and greatest electronic gadgets. Too bad there is no hard drive in the 2008 M3.

But what is this option 6FL? What does it look like and how do you install it?

If you can find an '08 M3 spec'd the way you want in your area (or reasonably close), I'd probably pull the trigger. You'll get much better financing (although you can do MUCH better than 5.9% on an '09), the base price is cheaper, and you'll get a bigger discount. All of this can add up to well over 5 figures in savings.

I would have cancelled my '09 order and gotten an '08 if I could have found one with my desired options. Unfortunately, the closest one was in California, so I would have had to pay more in taxes, shipping, and for extra options that I didn't need. These extra costs negated much of the potential savings.

The other obvious downsides to buying an '08 model at this point are: (1) the extra depreciation; and (2) missing the new iDrive.

Now that I've had a chance to play with both the new and old iDrive, I'm very, very happy to have it. Just a few of the advantages that I've already noticed in the few days I've owned the car:
  • The resolution is much better on the new screen.
  • The new iDrive operates much faster (no lag) and more seamlessly.
  • It is much easier to move between various functions and options.
  • Many more navigation option and features and navi is much easier to use.
  • More options for split-screen display.
  • 3-dimensaional topographical maps.
  • Much easier and faster POI searching.
  • Harddrive for music storage.
  • iPod functionality is much more user friendly.

You have to figure out how much this is worth to you and evaluate it with all of the other factors listed above. Good luck.

I have the 2009 idrive and it is far superior to the 08. It sounds like you want the latest and greatest and the 09 is amazing. I love it so far. The display is higher resolution and bigger than the 08. The layout is well designed and easier to use. Has a 3D perspective view for the navigation which is really cool. Has a hard drive (I think about 40gig) to store your MP3's. If you're willing to pay a few extra thousand for an 09 than go for it you won't regret it. If you want to save $5 grand than go for the 08.

Yeah, the 2009 I-Drive would essentially cost me $10,000 over 5 yrs. It's in essence a computer....but no computer is worth $10,000.

You're also assuming you can find an '08 spec'd the way you want it, which will be harder here in Tejas than in California.

What he said...I went for the killer deal on the 2008 and am loving it!! With this car, I don't even really pay attention to the I drive....definitely not worth 10K im my opinion. Also, while a one year newer model will be worth more..I don't believe it will really be much of a difference, as taking delivery of an 2008 this late in the model year means you are going to have a pretty good mileage credit (due to having lower miles) which will partially offset the difference between the model years....

The M3 is a great car regardless of i-drive. I would not base your buying decision on i-drive alone. The sensible option would be to buy the 2008 car and save yourself $10k. They are the SAME car, an awesome M3 with 4.0 V8 which is the reason why you should be buying the car. Don't waste $10k on what is essentially a software upgrade. Go for it!
