This sucks that all the buzz has died down and the flow of information is SO dead that we are reduced to talking about the material of the center console. BMW release more information!!!!

BMW has released enough information to tell you what material the center console is made of. The official PR says:
On all trim versions of the new BMW M3, the console is finished in
black leather, harmoniously extending the instrument surrounds and control
area in both the right colour and design.

Autocar magazine stated they'd be driving it in June in the issue following the Geneva unveilling of the concept.

Yes, june or july, but that's only a "first drive." Don't expect times, only impressions...

Thanks for that info. I must have missed it as I was reading.

I am just glad that it is not plastic. However I think if it continued the trim choice, it might have been better. For example in the M5, I had brushed aluminum and it was also in the center console by the gear lever as well and it looked really good IMO.

What does this mean? Does it mean that console is made of leather? I really dont think so. It is plastic in the sedan and coupe why would it be leather in the m3?

The sad fact in cars these days is that every interior is mostly plastic. Even leather trimmed interiors are just plastic underneath. Besides my E36 M3 has a full plastic dash with a leather look imprint. Plastic interiors in M3's or any BMW is nothing new. I am glad to see the the console is leather wrapped though..

No, it's part of the interior trim on sedan and coupe. But in the M3 it's not part of the trim, it's always black leather. If you want the side panels of center console to be leather you'll have to choose extended leather anyway.

Look for a comparison between "standard" E92 and M3:

I think the aluminum in the regular 3 looks better than the leather in the M3. (where the gear lever is)

FYI, a leather center console option on the Porsche is over $1,000... This car also has the extended leather, so that all along the dash below the trim matches the interior leather colour. This tends to upgrade the feel of the car by eliminating a lot of plastic.
