That's because, like most virally-induced cancers, there is a pretty long latency period between time of infection and onset of cancer. In the past, oral cancer was attributed to smoking and tobacco chewing, but more recent evidence points to a viral cause in the majority of cases.

I realize that it's a depressing article, but that doesn't make the information false.

As an aside, oral cancer is usually diagnosed at a late stage (after metastasis), and as such, has pretty high death rates. The goal now is to develop more comprehensive HPV vaccines, which is challenging but not impossible.
