Google "Persian Empire" ...you'll find out why. Hope your Geography is OK and can read the maps OK to see the connection. The orange area was all ours back then. The area between Persian Gulf to Caspian Sea is where modern day Iran sit at the moment.

Ok but seriously since you asked. Persians mostly live in Iran but the population of Iran consists of more than just Persians, there are Turks, kurds, some arabs even, balochi, etc. So there is a distinction between being Iranian and Persian.
