Quebec City Vacation

We are thinking of going there for vacation this summer.
Are there any special events we should look for ( or avoid).
Should we pretty much stay in the City as first time visitors
or rent a car and move around ?

It's a great town, the Fairmont Chateau Frontenac is a great place to stay right in the middle of the old city. The Hilton and Delta hotels are also great places to stay. The summer is a great time to visit. For the most part there are more services available in English than before. There is plenty to do in the old town for first time visitors.

Once you are in the old town most everything is within walking distance, but if you want to get out to nearby attractions you may want a rental car.

Quebec City was awesome! So much history over there... MTL Bimmer already linked to my photos from that trip. You can easily walk to the old part of the city, and to be honest, it's the best way to go. Parking can be tough in the city, plus most of the historical areas aren't car accessible. However, there are parts that I enjoyed that I couldn't have seen with without my car. Just balance it out...

Also, stay at a nice bed and breakfast (I stayed at Gîte Auger) if you're going with your significant other. I recommend it over any hotel, sans the Le Château Frontenac. Let me know if you have any other questions, and enjoy your trip!

First of all, yes Quebec speaks mainly French compared to Montreal, but if you stay mainly in touristic attractions you will be fine and most people know some sort of English (I am rather ashamed of that but w/e) and you will be fine.

The Chateau Frontenac is, like everyone said, one of the most renown hotel in North America. Pretty old, and nice building, but I do not think it is the best choice to stay. It is pretty nice for sure, but I would rather go there and visit it, than staying there. The rooms aren't that nice anymore, but I mean the service is incredible. You need to stay in the Old Town part though. This is where the main attractions are, and the buildings are the nicest. The Chateau has probably one of the best locations, with the Concorde (http://www.loewshotels.com/en/Quebec-City-Hotel), but the rooms aren't that nice and it is pretty tourist-ish. If I were you, I would stay at The Auberge Saint Antoine (http://www.saint-antoine.com/). It is just down the Chateau, and you are right in front of the St-Lawrence river, and near the Petit Champlain. Plus, the restaurant there is probably within the Top 3 of the whole city. It is called The Panache. (http://www.restaurantpanache.com/EN/index.html) It is worth the trip, no joke.

Other restaurants to consider in this part of town:

You can definitely do most of the attractions in the city without having the need for a car. But as you can see in the pictures of Chewy734, you can see a whole other aspect of Quebec by getting a car and going on "l'Ile d'Orleans" and Charlevoix. Since you are going during the summer, it is truly amazing. Vendors are outside, the atmosphere is cracking, and the air is pure. Amazing time for sure.

I miss Quebec City now that I look back at my pics. Enjoyed it more than Montreal... I guess maybe because I didn't spend as much time as I would've liked in Montreal.

If you're here from July 7th to the 17th we have an awesome music festival.

It's like $50 for all concerts and you get to see dozens of bands. Last years big names included: Arcade Fire, Black Eyed Peas, K'Naan, Iron Maiden, Rush, Rammstein and Santana.

I haven't seen the list for this year but it never disappoints, there's always something to see.

Been there twice, both times in winter for PeeWee hockey tourney. I do have to say some of the most pleasant and friendly people in French speaking Canada I have ever met. I'd love to go back when things are not frozen! Old city is phenomanal and some great restaurant's.

Quebec! That's gonna be great! If you love outdoor activities, you might wanna try snowmobiling or skiing .

Quebec also boasts around 400 museums and a magnificent collection of artistic monuments. Quebec also has many gardens like the Montreal Botanical Garden that includes the Chinese Garden, Japanese Zen and the unique Insectarium that has a wide variety of insects. The Parc Aquarium, which is an aquarium park, displays numerous fish and mammals and features like ponds, waterfalls and rock gardens. Quebec also includes many other gardens, such as the Reford Garden and the Battlefields Park. Quebecers enjoy visits to zoos, aquariums, tropical forests and the thrilling safari rides like the Parc Safari.

L'Echaude is one of my favorite restaurants, so is the Cafe du Monde. Also check out le Laurie Raphael. You'll find that Quebec City people are very warm & helpful. Try speaking French even if you're not good, they'll love it! (at least you're trying)
