Exclamation Toyota FT-86: The first 'exciting' toyota concept in ages

Toyko 2009 Preview: Toyota FT-86 Concept brings back the Hachiroku

Toyota's President Akio Toyoda has said that Toyota is in desperate need of an excitement injection, and here's the first dose: the Toyota FT-86 Concept.

Inspired by the Corolla-based AE86 sports coupe of the '80s, the FT-86 concept was designed by the automaker's ED2 styling studio in France and bears a remarkable resemblance to the FT-HS concept shown at the Detroit Auto Show several years back.

Unfortunately, Toyota hasn't released much information about the FT-86's platform, but we do know that it's powered by a Subaru-derived 2.0-liter boxer four sending power to the rear wheels. Toyota focused on keeping the weight down to improve handling and, according to one source, the platform is unique to the concept. The engine sits lower in the engine bay to aid aerodynamics while keeping the center of gravity in check, and the overall dimensions of Toyota's new 2+2 are 163.78 inches long and 69.29 inches wide, with a wheelbase of 101.18 inches.

After the FT-86 bows in concept form at the Tokyo Motor Show next month, the production model will be shown sometime next year with sales beginning sometime in late 2011 with a sticker somewhere north of $20,000.

This looks like the car they are developing with Subaru. Never a huge fan but always good to see a new sports car.

I am surprised no one has noticed his but the glasshouse and the wing mirrors are very similar to the late Ferrari 456. Infact the silouhette is a jagged copy of the 456

Is this the same car as the FT-HS that was floating around for a while? Or was the FT-HS a high performance varient of this car?

If they're planning on using a turbocharged suby engine they better incorporate a hood scoop of some sort. ANd if they're planning on using a N/A suby engine then this car is going to be slow as piss.

It will be FI. There is no way they will release a sub-180hp NA sports coupe.

RX-8 meets 370Z.

It's okay. Nothing special.

It's cool but it will be a watered down version of this by the time it rolls off the line (obviously the interior but the exterior as well). One quick observation is that the pedals are really really far apart.
