I for one don't even listen to music on my iPhone anymore since I subscribe to Sirius.

I'm looking forward to iOS 6 release tomorrow so I can test out the ability for my iDrive to read out my text and email messages.

Start at post #82 at the link below, and you'll read all about how to set it up for text messages. e-mail is mostly not functional yet, and Pandora works with the cable and BMW "Connected" App. (There's been a few of us tinkering with it since iOS 6 came out.)

Who cares really? Its just another phone and some of you are to into your idrive and options. Cars are meant to be driven from A to B.

I am not in my car long enough to use some of my features anyway. I am not in my X5 long enough either.

I have all this shit at home and then some.

I never ever connect my iPhone in the car, my iPhone knows how to communicate with my M3 wirelessly also I have no intention to change to iPhone 5 my iPhone 4 serves me well.

I'm assuming the hole in the armrest compartment? I was actually worried the iPhone 5 would be too tall to be able to close the armrest over it. If that's what this poster was confirming as a non-issue, I'm a happy camper too.

Your solution...

Bluetooth.

Why would you even want to use a wire?

New iPhone update makes the 4S pretty much identical to the iPhone 5 (internally)

Bluetooth audio sounds like crap in every system I've heard. I have it in my Infiniti EX35 and the wired USB connection absolutely blows it away. It could be a function of the car audio implementation per vendor. For example, the Sat Radio in my M3 sounds AWFUL. I can hear compression artifacts and it lacks any real fidelity. It's actually the worse sounding Sat System in any of the 8 cars I've owned. Once my 3 months run out, I won't even keep it even though I have in my other car. It's that bad. The Sat radio sounds remarkably good in my Infiniti (which has a B(L)OSE Audio system no less) though.

Maybe someone will do Bluetooth right, but so far, no one has based on the systems I listened to in the various cars I looked at before going with the M.

^^ Yep, Bluetooth audio is noticeably inferior to the wired/dock sound. Also, if you're on a longer trip, BT can really eat up your battery. With a wired connection, you get charging.

Personally, I hate Bluetooth for audio. Zero benefits. It's not a whole lot of effort to plug your phone in when you get in the car.

^ I agree with all of the above. But the main reason I use BT for short trips isn't because it's too much effort to connect the cable. It's because I very often forgot to get my phone out of the armrest again when I arrived. BT allows me to keep my phone in my pocket. I don't listen to music on my phone often enough that checking the armrest would have become a habit, so for the few times I do want music from my phone, as long as it's a short trip I'd rather enjoy the convenience at the cost of some audio fidelity. Longer trips, wired all the way -- unless it's a long FUN drive, in which case it's windows down and engine revs up.

That's no joke. I'm getting 45Mpbs download, and ~15Mbps upload via iPhone 5. Way faster than my home internet connection.

So...my 64 GB iPhone 4s is now loaded with 50 GB of music (playlists), and resides permanently in the Snap-In Media Adapter. It has no cellular service anymore. It uses bluetooth to connect to the iRadar. The new iPhone 5 uses bluetooth for phone and SMS-on-iDrive....and on long trips, use the Lighting-USB-cable to keep it charged. This scenario works really well.

Someone suggested using the built-in BMW hard drive to store music, saying it's superior. Using that creates burdensome playlist modifications, no album art work, and a UI that is fairly fifteen years out of date.

If I didn't already have a iPhone 4s, I would have looked for a used iPhone 4 (so it fits in the Snap-In Media Adapter) that even could have been a bit scratched and dented -- all it does is ride in the armrest...doesn't have to look pretty.

Even if you wanted to, they aren't available yet. But to answer your question, yes. It just won't do video.
