2010 S4 revealed... could the engine make it into a 1-series fighter?

I really am a fan of audi’s new designs; will this be better than a 6-speed (or 7-speed dual clutch) bmw 335 though? At least the fuel economy won’t be as miserable as the big 4.2 8-cyl from the older S’s. Hopefully this engine will make it into the TT!

Audi’s performance version of the excellent A4 is coming stateside in September 2009, about six months after the Europeans first get to snap it up. But everyone will get their first official look at the S4 and S4 Avant at the same time: in October at the 2008 Paris auto show. In the case of the S4 Avant, U.S. residents shouldn’t get too attached—unlike the last generation, we won’t get it here.

Wait...

"The German automaker says it prefers the combination of gasoline direct injection and supercharging for the new V-6, as opposed to going the twin-turbocharger (both super- and turbocharged) route"

What?:iono:

isn't the S4 supposed to be an M3-fighter? it cant possibly fight the 1 series unless they offered it at around $40k...

edit: i just reread the performance numbers...those will significantly lag the M3 and even the 135i if those are the true production numbers....what are they up to?

The 300 hp TT-RS is going to be close to 70k. I doubt you will see the engine in the A3 since it is designed for longitudinal applications.

VW have a 'twin-charged' engine. It is a 1.4 litre petrol engine with a supercharger and a turbocharger. They are planning to release more twin-charged engines in the future. Designed to give good performance and efficiency.

Audi are saying they prefer to use a petrol engine with direct injection and just a supercharger.

Can't be because S4 is price out of 1's range, that car is at least 47-48k base. BMW still provides the best performance for the buck in luxury car segment. Why would any performance enthusiast pay more for less until you get into the aesthetics, of course then it's not performance orientated.

^^ Not to mention the A4/S4 is much bigger than a 1 series. It competes with the 3er. So the S4 is a competitor to the 335i. Not the M3 as that has to take on the RS4 when it is released.

If Audi wanted to compete with the 1er coupe they would need to come up with something new in the A3 range. The S3 competes with the 130i hatch but they don't have anything to directly compete with the coupe yet.

Yeah I agree with 123D.
S4 == 335
RS4 == M3
S3 == 130

Something vs the 1 series coupe? Maybe the TT?

TT and A3 are transverse(a5 platform).
btw I really love Audi but it overpriced now especially in canada where I can get an 335xi for 52 while the s4 is 70K and 95K RS4

Wow that is plain stupid. Even more reasons to get a nicer car, BMW But I'm not a big fan of Audi nor their designs really. They seem too plain and boring to me and their cars look so identicle. But as for the OP, I don't think that engine will be the 1-series fighter. They already have a 1-series fighter, I think the title should be more along the lines of a 135i fighter.
