Front Undershield - Heads Up

I have to replace the front "felt" undershield on my M3. This is due to the combination of lower springs and a steep driveway wearing away the sides. The middle, larger section has been banged up too and the plastic frame is busted.

Anyway, a heads up, when you order the middle section (#20), the plastic frame and seals (#25) come attached to the "felt" part, as do the Bowden suspension cables (#24), so there is no need to purchase separately. The part also has the body nuts (#17)attached, so this piece is ready to bolt on. Attached is a picture that indicates what is attached.

I am going to manufacture some aluminium bolt-on skid plates for the side sections (#23). I'll let you know how that goes.

Mines getting "bald" as well from all the scraping but not so bad as to be replaced.. I'm guessing yours has holes in it?

It's gawn! I took a hard left sweeper and there was a scraping noise. When I checked, the bottom was hanging down by the rear of the component.
Of course, when I looked at the middle shield, the opportunity to do yet more DIY became apparent

I would like to report some horrendous fanboy understeer from the resulting loss of aerodynamic integrity, but there is no change.

It's main role is give front bumper and inner fender rigidity at the bottom, and prevent bumper from pushing and cracking the plastic parts in the lower ducts at high speeds, plus possibly bending the tranny cooler. And yes, they also play an aerodynamic role, but other than the above, you'd be just wasting more fuel and flapping connectors and such around inside the fender . The middle one is also important, since it sends hot air from the oil cooler under the car.

But forget about all that; the car looks awful without them, the bumper moves like an old car under way, and they're cheap to replace, so no reason why not fix them, especially on an expensive sports car like the M3. Take care.

I am fixing them, that's the point.

Good post. I'm sure a lot of folks will find this useful as eventually that part will need to be replaced since it's prone to damage.

interesting
cars made after 2009 have different part numbers for the 2 sides (#23 in the above pic)
i wonder if they made it stronger or if there are any changes to the parts?

I just called my dealer and they quoted me $78 plus tax for the left insulation tip

Best price I have found online is at Tischer for $29.42. Has anybody else found it cheaper?

My dealer has an online parts store that is much cheaper than if you call them directly?...BMWOFMINNETONKA.
I got the whole undersheild including the tips and cables etc for $136.00. I went in and picked it up and they matched their own "online" price...

Is there an actual DIY with pix and process of the installation of this center undershield?

Mine just came in and would like a briefing before I begin...or do I need to create one?
