COTA tire wear
What kind of tire wear are people seeing at COTA running r-comps? Ortho281 and I are in the 2:32-2:34 times and are seeing massive abuse to the outside of the left front tire. While it is a CCW track, T2, T6, T13-14 and T16-18 are all long sweeping right hand turns. I am running -3.2 camber and zero toe. I would literally have to rotate tires every 2 sessions to prevent this. I am
Setting mine at 36 psi when I get back to the garage. I am curious what others are seeing and how they are managing it.

COTA tire wear is usually pretty good. You need to check tire temps across the surface. I don't think pressures are your problem. I think you need more camber. I know my car is different, but on my Hoosier slicks I am running at least 4 degrees of camber.

Tire temps will help sort it out, no doubt, but I think it's safe to say the outside edge is getting super hot in steady state cornering situations based on the description above. What would be interesting is what the inner tread patch temps are after a long right hand turn... Did you try adding 1psi cold to the LF or anything like that? I'm going to assume you aren't suffering from understeer in these corners.

R7. A friend contacted Hoosier to discuss R6 versus R7 for similar issues with his new GT4. He was told they are very different tires. R7 needs 39-41 hot which is way higher than R6. I will increase my pressures.

As an aside, while COTA tire wear due to track surface is usually excellent, they seem to be not cleaning the track like previously. We had so much OPR on the track that it was terrible. Everyone was picking up a ton of OPR which made a mess of tires. I have 3-4 sets I need to clean up and remove the OPR before I can use them again.

I'm with you guys.
It doesn't matter what tire. I've run Michelin GT's (which wear terribly, but they'll "work" even when they're basically dead) I was running 2:31-33 with some traffic before the cords started to appear. I didn't expect that kind of wear so quickly from an endurance tire. But I just kept flipping left to right to manage wear. Left Front took the biggest beating, left rear next. Wear appears on the outermost shoulder of the left front first and foremost. Then the inside of the left rear next. I kept the pressures in the 30 range cold mainly because the sidewalls aren't really stiff. I'll never use Michelins again. Sizes were the 30/65-18 square My go to tire is the Pirelli DH. 305/645-18 I run Sub 2:30's consistently. Personal best is a 2:28:48. 2:29-30's regularly depending on traffic. Tire wear is again mostly on the left front. Outermost shoulder first. I will usually flip side to side every two sessions at COTA. Start the pressures around 27-28 cold. Keeping it around 33-35 hot. My AD08R's were also more polished on the left front. When I had to switch to street tires when it got wet. Left front from my experience at COTA is the left front is the first to wear, and by a large margin. Mainly T2, T6, T16-18 as those are long right handers and you carry a lot of speed, more so with aero. Camber in front is -3.7, zero toe. My car is similar to ortho281. Except I'm 3370 pounds, and I have a little more aero with the larger rear wing and double dive planes. I'm hesitant to run more camber as I'm not wanting to take any stability out of the front end. But where it's wearing I don't think it will help noticeably. T6-T18 for me is where I think the majority of the wear is happening. That's a long right hander. I picked up a few things from my last outing having to manage tires more since those michelins were dying faster than expected. I hope to be in the High 2:27 range when I head back in two weeks. I'm bringing an extra tire for the right front since it's a Two day. I'm also now running 18X11 Square so I'll be able to rotate and flip, vs just flipping side to side. Hopefully this gets me better wear. |
