Does the wheel speed sensor (DSC pulse generator) require coding when replaced?

I'm pretty sure that I read that since it isn't a "module", it doesn't need programming/coding.

I agree that normally an item like this probably wouldn't need to be coded but what made me ask is due to the part listing on RealOEM stating that it was uncoded so I took that as a possibility that coding might be needed.

Did you ever figure this one out? I have a bad left rear wheel speed sensor. I'm past warranty, so I'm replacing it. I ordered the part and plan on installing it myself next weekend.

I never ended up having to replace it. The issue ended up being elsewhere.

I currently have

5DB2:
DSC: Wheel-speed sensor: increment gear, rear left
Error will cause a warning light
Error is currently present
Test conditions have been completed

I ordered part number: 34-52-6-762-476 ($86.34)
I'm hoping replacing the sensor solves the issue. More to follow...

Replaced the speed sensor and got the fault again. It's at BMW right now to figure it out. In a 10 mile drive it came on three times and then cleared itself each time after about a quarter mile.

For those who like to DIY, pretty easy install.

Remove the wheel
Remove about 6 nuts/screws off of the wheel liner.
Pull the liner forward to get to where it plugs in
Disconnect the old one
Unscrew the connection from the wheel hub
Plug the new one in and route in the same location
Button it up and put the wheel back on.

I was told today that I installed the wrong part. Funny thing is that I went to parts and asked for a rear left sensor and this is the part they ordered and gave me. I'll post more tomorrow with which part is the right one.

I got this code as well, had to replace the wheel speed sensor AND the wheel bearing..you may want to mention this to your SA.

It's been identified that I have a bad wheel bearing. The wheel bearing has a magnetized strip around the outside that sends a signal to the wheel speed sensor. The bearing and my car are at the dealership and all was good until they tried to separate the hub to get to the bearing. The axle is not pusing out. The whole assembly is off the car and they get it apart. They've tried to soak it in some sort of PB blaster mixture and then press it out with no luck. The next step is to order the whole assembly which equates to $1500 in parts and $1000 in service. BMW is not sure if this is covered under the extended warranty (third party) because there is no mechanical failure in the attached components, they just can't get it apart. They called the company and explained that it was seized up and listed the new parts and additional service requirement. An adjuster will be out here by Monday. Looks like no autocross for me this weekend. Last one of the season this year. More to follow.

That's nuts. They should be able to use a hub puller tool to pull the hub off of the end of the axle pretty easily. I just did this on my E30 and it was a bitch until I got the hub puller. Taking it all apart was much easier than getting it back together because I didn't have to be concerned about ruining the old bearing. Getting the axles back in was a bitch without ruining the new bearings. Hopefully you don't end up needing new axles in addition.

34-21-2-283-253 Protection Plate Left
34-21-2-283-275 Supporting Ring Brake shoe
07-11-9-904-511 Hex Bold with washer

Total parts was $1531.44; Total labor was $924; Total Price $2455.44; I paid $158.67 thanks to the Carmax extended warranty. Would've only been $320 to replace the wheel bearing if they could've taken the hub off.

Hey guys, I have a related question. Let me know if you have any experience with my issue.

I have an e92 M3, and was at Thunderhill a few weekends ago for some track action. Early on the second day, while waiting in the pit to get on the track, I had several warning lights come on:

* Bracking/chassis stablization malfunction!
* DBC malfunction! Drive carefully
* Start-off assistance inactive!

I went to Dinan to have them diagnos the problem. The tech reported that "the rear pulse generator/wheel bearing assy. was defective." So I ordered a new pulse generator from partsgeek.com (about half of what BMW would charge!). It'll be here in a few days.

Yesterday, I pulled the wheels off and inspected both rear pulse generators. They had a lot of debris on them. They otherwise looked intact, although it looked like the one on the left had been rubbing slightly against something. I cleaned them off, and then reinstalled. I am still getting the same warning lights.

My question is this. Is the pulse generator somewhat like the brake pad sensors, in that when they come into contact with something, that is an indication that the wheel bearing is in need of replacement? I'd probably do the wheel bearing replacement myself, but in reading this post, I am a little concerned that it might be tough. I also don't want to put on the pulse generator, and have contact something and go bad again.

There is another post (http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthread.php?t=697551), which seems to suggest that the sensors just wear out, and are unrelated to wear on the wheel bearing.

BTW, my car has about 67000 miles (mostly freeway) and I am not noticing any noise from the wheel bearings.

I replaced my sensor and still got the same warning which led to having to replace the wheel bearing. The sensor is relatively easy to replace. It's not as easy in the rear as the front as it requires getting under the fender lining. The replacement of the wheel bearing is also more difficult in the rear as the front. It was only going to cost about $320 to replace the bearing (parts included) if things had gone as planned.

My new speed sensor arrived yesterday. I quickly tore out the wheelwell liner, and switched out the old one that Dinan had said was defective. Started the car up while still on the jack. No change. Still getting the error messages. Decided to check the other side, just to be sure. No change there either.

So last night I ordered a set of new wheel bearings. I figure that the car has almost 70K on it, and I intend to a few dozen track days this year, so it can't hurt. Just hope I don't run into any problems.

Is anyone aware of a DIY for a wheel bearing replacement for a 2009 e92 M3, or similar?
