Get your differential check!
i've been bringing my 08 e92 back for differential (rubbing while turning) noise checked out at least 2 or 3 times, and every time the dealership could not reproduce my problem. lately i've been hearing another noise like a metal moving with little lubricant. so i took my car in for service today, and they finally were able to reproduce the noise! unfortunately for me, they need to replace the differential completely, but it will take a few weeks because the part doesn't exist in the US and need to be ordered from Germany! anyway, my SA said that it's ok to drive like that until the part arrived. is it really ok to drive?
sigh...

i thought the fix for this was just a fluid change and not an entire diff swap.

I had this a while ago. They did the service bulletin of replacing the fluid and the noise didn't immediately go away. I had to drive the car for awhile and work the new fluid into the clutches???? If that's correct. Anyway after a bit of driving and a bunch of hard turns the noise is now permanently gone.
But if I had a new diff coming in the mail I'd be driving the hell out of the one that was in my car now

M's make all kinds of noises from hiss', pops, creaks, whines, thumps and what not. Everytime a new model arrives we have to get aquainted to a series of new noises. Personally I like the liitle quirky noises the new M3 makes. It reminds me of the heritage that these cars come from. BMW will prety much take care of any warranty issue that does not come from misuse. I know misuse is a loaded term, I get around this with my dealer through beer and wine. Everytime I take my car in for service I leave a case of premium beer in the trunk for the techs and a bottle of wine for my service writer. I have done this for the past several cars I have owned. I have never paid for any issue I have had with my cars as long as they are still under warranty. In fact only the lead tech works on my cars, and the Service Manager deals with me directly. (Hint good beer & wine go along way)
My point to all this giberish is... If you are looking to have your M's not make any of the quirky noises M's make... don't buy an M, quirky noises are part of what makes an M an M. Drive them hard, have fun and get them services and repaired as needed. |

i only started hearing the noise AFTER they changed the oil at the 1200mile service
maybe they forgot to put in the anti-slip compound? (can't remember the exact term, but its a special liquid that's addedd to the differential oil) |

I just got mine back , they took my car out and were able to recreate the rubbing sound. They replaced the differential oil and the sound seems to be gone now.
