New M3 for me, I have owned Porsches before...

I recently bought a mineral white competition package E92 M3

Compared to a 2009 Porsche Carrera 4S I recently owned, I can say:

- Performancewise the M3 is 95% of the Porsche
- The interior quality I prefer the M3
-Steering I prefer the M3
- Handling the M3 is better balanced
- Engine sound the M3 is much better
-PDK buttons on the Porsche steering wheel are not good, I prefer much more the paddles of the M3

If you drive a modern Porsche, many people give you bad looks...

Generally speaking, the M3 is superb !!

A lot go from m3 to P cars and you do it in the other way. Congrats. Im amazed that you think the m3 interior quality is better. To me 997 got more leather wrapped in the interior and from stitches to other else, it does look good to me.

Porsche is perfect if:

- It's a 1998 model or older 911

- It is a GT3

Modern Porsches have almost totally lost their soul...

My PDK tranny was broken after 5k miles and replaced under warranty, never I used launch control...

Porsche differentials are worser than e92 m3 diffs...

If E92 M3 500 lbs. Lighter, it would be top perfect !

I was on the same boat. I've owned many porsches and honestly i love porsches better, my 996 S Cab was honestly one of the best drivers cars to me. My Lime Rock Edition M3 maybe quicker but i like the porsche better. Bmw Needs to step it up & produce cars that weigh much less then the current E92 M3.

The rest is subjective and I won't argue with you, but steering, really? Are you sure that you have actual human hands? Porsche has BMW completely destroyed in steering feel. And I should know, I switch back and forth between an M3 and 997, 996 or 993 daily.

If I want looks and performance I would go Gallardo or a modified ZR1. I would never own a Porsche and won't even bat an eye looking at one, unless it's a Carrera GT.

Good to hear your review and you are back in a bmw..

Coming from 2 997's I can tell you that the 911 is far more engaging and enjoyable to drive. Lighter on its feet, better brakes, and overall more enjoyable than the heavier m3. I owned a 997.2s with pdk and sport suspension at the same time I had my m3 and everytime I would get out of the Porsche and into the m3 id feel like I was driving an SUV.

I agree with the op on interior quality, technology, and dct is on another level than the Porsche but that's about it.

Your statement that Porsche diffs are worse than M3 diffs is totally ridiculous. How did you come to this conclusion? Did you drive the M3 balls-out yet on the track? Or did you base that on public road driving?

In regards to the balance, yes the M3 feels a little more planted, but after some wheel time you will realize that the M3 is a heavy boat, again, an incredible performer for that much weight. But if you really push a 911 you appreciate how (relatively) light they are, which translates to a little busy steering feel when you dive into the corner (the 991 does that much better now due to the wider front track), but it is something you get used to over time.

In the end I think the M3 is incredible, best bang for your buck, and it is very hard to justify to pay that much more for a 911 when the M3 offers so much unless you are a total 911 fan.
It sounds to me you never drove a 911 on a track or at the limit, which is totally fine and most owners don't do that, but if you would you'd come to a very different conclusion.
I think He was comparing the M3 to his 911 carrera 4s which @ 3,500# is another front camber challenged german pig.

Yes, the steering Porsche is slightly better

But E92 M3 steering is very nice !

Actual diffs on Porsches have serious problems. You may check www.rennlist.com -- 997.1 GT3's diffs wear out very fast, 997.2 GT3's diffs also -- You may ask Matt at Guards Transmission -- Lots of Porsche owners update the internals or change the diffs, they are really very weak !

I drove 997.2 C4S and 996 GT3 on track -- C4S not a track car... GT3 perfect for the track, but too much compromisos for the road...

Modern 911's like Carrera S or Carrera 4S are slightly better than E92 M3, but not lots better...

GT3 is perfect and unique, incredible at the track, but too many compromisos for road use...

I had a 1990 964 Carrera 4S -- Incredible quality the interior, hand made

Also had a 2009 Carrera 4S -- The E92 M3 I prefer its interior

And my last Porsche was a 996 GT3 -- I had to change the seats for Recaro buckets, as I was sliding too much inside...

True, yes, but in the end I was only able to drive my 997.2 C4S 2-3 times a month as it could not be used as a daily driver. I felt the car a bit better than the E92 M3, but very Little bit... I can use the E92 M3 every day, no problem with that... So why own a modern Porsche ? -- GT3 yes, Carrera S or 4S no !

2007 Carrera S much inferior than 2009 Carrera S -- E46 M3 can keep up with 997.1 Carrera S easily

I went to PSDS (Porsche Sport Driving School) in Alabama for 2 different driving courses -- The 997.2 Carrera S felt nice on the track, but not encouraging... I felt the Cayman S was a much better car, but underpowered for marketing purposes to protect sales of the 911... Also drove a Boxster Spyder, very capable with PDK !

Generally speaking 911 is better than M3, no doubt about that. But modern 911's are less engaging to drive, soul less... If I can have an M3 and a GT3 on my garage, yes !!!!!!!

But an M3 and a normal 911, no.......

I've been considering selling my '11 GT3 w/ less than 4K miles for a E92 M3 w/ Comp pkg, which is why I registered here. Sometimes I feel that the GT3 is too focused to drive on the street with any regularity. Great on backroads but as a DD I've got to think that the M3 would be better.

I'm sure someone here would be more than happy to trade you, straight up. Sure you don't want an E90?

In all seriousness, though - it's good seeing the respect our cars get from previous Porsche owners.

991S 911 > E9x M3 > 997.2S 911.
But from a price perspective, no Porsche can touch the all around awesomeness of the M3.

Actually the M4 sounds real nice. I haven't had a boosted car since my B5 S4. Looking to get $110K for my GT3 given the options and low miles. The right options with none of the frivolous ones.

True. Porsches are spendy to buy, insure, use and maintain. Free service with BMW is appealing for sure.
