New guy from Camp Pendleton SoCal

Hey what's up guys and gals. Completely new to the BMW world! But excited to be here. Looking at buying an 2008 M3 coupe within the next few weeks. I came from a 2010 Hyundai Genesis wrecked it and buying the coupe with the Ins money. Looking forward to meeting some of u SoCal folk, for insights and hopefully hookups with the performance side of the house.. Here is my old car

And this was her after accident

Hopefully you are senior enlisted or an officer when looking at something like this. Thank you for serving!

I am senior enlisted and can tell you first hand anyone E5 and below will struggle to make payments on a car like this unless you put a huge down payment on it. I know what an E5's base pay is with and without dependents at 10-20 years of service.

Having said that I hope this is a wise choice for you. So many other cheaper vehicles you should look at first.

Honestly I would look at an E86 M or a mint 2006 E46 M3 first. Keep in mind also I would have at least $2000 on the side for anything that would go south on these cars, even with aftermarket warranties because some wont touch the cooling system on the BMWs and that can add up quick. However if its CPO remember the deductible.

Other cars to consider:

Nissan 350z
Nissan 370z
Honda S2000
91-01 Acura NSX (these can get expensive but a lot of DIY)
Mazda 6
Mazda RX8
Lexus IS350

BTW the front side window tint is illegal in the state of California. Car looks great though. All I am saying is just make sure you know what you are getting into. Now if you are a CWO, I don't want to hear any excuse why you didnt pay this off cash. LOL JK...

I know what u mean, and I do plan on putting down a big downpayment. I just so happen to be good with my finances, the payments I will have for this car are a Lil over 50 bucks less than it was for the genesis. And I'm a Sergeant got one more deployment out of my time... should be able to pay it off!

I am glad to hear you are a Sergeant. I hate to see E1-E3 folks getting into these and fall flat on their face. You know where I am coming from. I have had to counsel folks on this.

I did forget to mention deployable TAX FREE folks. Then the sky is the limit for you. I am jealous.

Again, thank you for serving!

for anyone looking to get into an M3 E92...why would you get a 2008?

i mean, i know that they would be cheaper, but have you considered the potential problems?

out of all the years in this generation, the first year is the most troublesome.

consider the possible repair problems you're going to face before getting into a car like this.

if you can, try for a 2010.

Yeah I seen it a lot in my 8 years in.. 18 year olds thinking they r adults and end up getting their car repo'd or with 32% apr.. I should be able to pay this off in less than three years

I've seen a few 2010+ on sale and they have been a Lil over my budget. I figured I'm getting a 5 year old car... Problems are to be expected.
I been doing some research on here and other BMW forums and problems with it seem to be generic, but they still take a beating

Welcome to the board. If you're going to be doing drag runs with a manual car, you'll want to get a diff reinforcement brace. The diff bolts tend to break with launches.

This has been debated to death and reality is the 2008 is the second year run through. This is known. 2007 in Europe (regardless anywhere in the world) was the first year E92 M3.

Actually I have seen more problems with 2010 and up M3s on this forum than the 2008-2009. Again just what I have seen.

I have had zero problems with my M3. I am also one of the folks that would never buy a last year run through of a car as they will lose the most if and when you go to sell.

Look at the E46 M3.

And for shits and giggles lets say its 2009. I bet you wouldn't say oh screw the second year M3. lol

The OP is fine with getting a 2008-2013 M3.

Thats like saying ohh, the 2002 Acura NSX had these problems and you should get a 2005. Thats a load of shit coming from a former owner of a 91 and 02 NSX.

Don't buy an out of warranty M3 unless you can easily spend $5000 a year on average to service it properly over and above your payment, so add about $400/m to your payment # and see if it still feels affordable. I'm speaking from experience with an E46 that I bought with only 59k miles on... Kept 2 years and almost $10k later I traded it for a brand new E92...mainly for the warranty!

Seriously bro what are you saying!? I have a 2008 and had absolutely zero problems with it (and I bought it out of warranty). I've heard of more problems with the later years more. I think it's a hit or miss honestly.

sorry for any offense to people that own an '08....sincerely.

reading that thread of high milage 08s is a great relief when it comes to the reliability of the E9x in general. but, generally speaking i wouldn't go for a first gen car of any make or model. there are kinks to be worked out. if you haven't experience this....great.

in my short time on this forum, it seemed to me that 08s had a lot of issues.

if i got that wrong, i apologize for that.

Only reason I'm considering that 08 is because the price and mileage is right no accidents and beat of all 6 speed manual

I have an 08 with only 39000 miles and going strong. Don't let the haters talk down about the 08. If its within your budget then go for it. May even leave some extra cash for mods. Look into an extended warranty though. Whats annoying are the folks who provide financial advice. Shits wack.
