I have a friend that's a Canes fan. Does that mean I can hang in the Porsche suite with you?

no, but it does mean you have to endure all the talk about wearing the turnover chain and such.

I wish! Stacked on work and can't make it. Definitely a bucket list item for me, though.

Yeah, I had been in the same boat the past few years and my friends kept going and sending such cool pics and really enjoyed their time at the track. I forced myself to do it this year and am really psych'd for the race. Next will be the IMSA event at VIR later this year.

I'm at Road Atlanta many times throughout the year. Been weening off of Petit Le Mans, though. Used to go every year since the first, but it has just gotten out of control with the number of people and isn't as much fun. You'll see me at plenty of NASA and club events, though!

I'm convinced this same problem isn't evident with Daytona just because of its sheer size and capability for people. Road Atlanta is a track carved through the trees.

We do a HUGE BMW corral for VIR every year. You should definitely check it out, as we get behind-the-scenes access all BMW race teams, hospitality tent with food/drink/TV, hot laps, and tons of giveaways like free Michelin tires and ///M School at the Performance Center.

That would be awesome and I am definitely going to try to make it this year.

Where do you stay near VIR and how long do you typically book your room in advance?

You should look now b/c rooms are scarce and you may get a deal before they start jacking up the rates. I usually stay at Berry Hill resort in South Boston which is 30 mins away; easily the nicest place in the area by far, but not cheap (about $260/night). Quite a few of the race teams also stay there and the onsite restaurant is really good. Ran into Bobby Rahal for dinner a few times which was cool

We usually get a block of rooms at Berry Hill and offer it with our corral package, so look out for it in the summer when we start registration.

I'm debating attending. I could use a break from the shitty Midwest weather, but I'll have my Corvette Racing gear on.

Not doing the whole RV thing, but what's it like to grab a hotel in Orlando and just drive in for the race? What's the best place to sit? Anything worth seeing/doing? I've attended the Road America event tons of times.

That's what I thought, thanks for the heads up. I'll start looking now or do the corral

Corvettes will be running, fly your colors!

I would not do the Orlando hotel unless you plan to just stage there and not go back until Sunday/Monday when leave. Orlando is at least an hour, one direction, from Daytona. You'd be better off looking for hotel in Flager or Ormond Beach, Daytona hotels will be all booked or charging too much now.

Seeing and doing depend on what ticket you purchase. Most ticks should allow some pit visibility. Not sure you want to sit in the stands all through the night, it will get chilly (or rain) in late January.

Good luck, let me know if you end up going.

Actually the two SPG hotels in Orlando are on the outskirts and it says only 35 minutes each way which I can handle.

I was debating getting there around lunchtime on Saturday to see the start of the race, head to the hotel around 10pm, then be back around 8am to watch the remainder.

I'd have to see where those hotels are on the "outskirts" of Orlando. Im staying in Ormond Beach and with traffic it can be 20 mins to my brothers house, 15 w/o which is pretty damn close. Not sure how anything near Orlando can be 35 mins.

If you can actually get there in that time frame, its not a bad plan.

BTW, I'd love to talk to you about the Corvette GS. Might be my next car....

Westin Lake Mary is pretty far north, almost 1/3 of the way between Orlando and Daytona Beach. Google Maps says it's 34 miles from the track.

Sheraton Orlando North is on the far north side of the city too, about 45 miles from the track.

Lake Mary or closer would be your best bet. Just dont get one of those shady motels.

If you end up going PM me your contact info.

I've been debating going to this race. This is going to be such a good year. But how would this race be as a spectator if you're staying at a hotel and you don't have a campground or "corral" to call home base during the event?

The stands are huge and you can walk around, too. My dad and I go to Road America for the IMSA stuff every year and we don't camp, we just drive in that morning.

So I just found out that I had a couple days' worth of PTO that carried over from 2017. The stipulation is that if I don't use it in January, I lose it for good. This has me thinking...

How ADA-accessible is the track? I'd love to bring my dad to this, but he just had knee replacement a little bit ago. Going to need some wheelchair space.

Ditto for Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta. My parents' house is a quick 15 minute drive.

It should be accessible, but I think you'll find it to be a huge swath of land to cover. I'd scope out where you want to sit and plan to park/enter near there. Some tracks even have ADA-specific parking & entrances.

Check the track's website, they should have maps and ADA info -- or call them.
